The preschool offers a program designed to meet the needs of children with social/emotional/ behavioral problems or developmental delays. During its 15-year history, Playcare has grown to include 17 children and their families, a staff of six professionals and a group of volunteers. Mary-Catherine Bellamy, the president of the non-profit society which oversees the operation of Playcare, recently expressed con- cern that Playcare’s volunteer needs continue to exceed the number of available volunteers. Program volunteers assist the teachers in the classroom while the volunteer board of directors pro- vides policy directives and makes operating decisions for the pro- gram. Bellamy noted, ‘‘Programs like Playcare provide an excellent op- portunity for individuals to make a positive contribution to our com- munity and one’s personal NORTH VANCOUVER 251-1116 development.”’ Individuals interested in con- tributing volunteer support to Playcare are invited to contact Mary Ellen Meunier at 988-7115 weekdays. For both program and board of director volunteers, the desire to participate is a more im- portant qualification than experi- ence, Playcare’s director Mary Ellen Meunier explains that the school offers remedial preschool activities including many out-of-door pur- suits during the summer, speech therapy, and parent education and support. ‘‘For many of our fami- lies, the chance to meet and share ideas with others in a similar situa- tion is an essential step along the path of accepting and overcoming child-rearing concerns and dif- ficuities,’’ said Meunier. All activities and aspects of the program teach coping skills and strategies to develop appropriate relationships with peers and adults, increase skill levels and, through success experiences, raise the child’s self concept and general well-being.
