WV library accessible by modem

FIVE YEARS after becoming
B.C.'s first public library with an
on-line computer catalogue
available to users, West Vancouver
Memorial Library now offers ac-
cess lo its catalogue by teleshauie.

With the assistance of a personal
computer, modem and standard
communications package, residents
can check the library’s holdings by
author, subject or title by merely
dialling the computer’s telephone
number. They can also determine
if the books they want are actually
in the library and if not, when they
are due for return.

Library representative Roy
Hunter said librarians in other
public libraries and the schools
have found the system very useful.

The catalogue is free to use and
is available between 6 a.m. and
11:30 p.m. seven days a week. The
library has only one telephone line
hooked up to the computer so they
ask people to limit their searches.

Gambling concerns
raised in NV City

THE NEWLY-elected North Van-
couver City Council is concerned
with the social impact of legalized
gambling.

At its Dec. 21 meeting council
voted to withdraw the city’s brief
to the B.C. Gaming Commission,
submitted in August, as no longer
necessarily representing council’s

ee position.

Council also asked the city’s
Social Planner Jill Davidson to
contact individuals and groups
throughout the city who would be
interested in addressing council on
the issue of gambling in B.C.
