NEST, TREE VALUABLE . Dear Editor: In answer to the News View- point of Nov. 1, if there was only an cmpty nest we wouldn't be making such a fuss! The whole issue revolved around the fact that the eagles do use the nest and re- quire the shelter of the surroun- ding forest to ensure its continued use. From May to August this sum- mer, I observed and photographed them going about their business of trying to raise a family. Because the nest was only discovered this May, no one knows for how Jong the site has been in use or if it’s their only one, but according to experts in the field, from the Ministry of Environment to a respected wildlife biologist, all are in agreement that the nest has more than likely been in use possibly as long as 60 years or more judging from the size of the nest and growth of moss and plants on it. As well, people in Deep Cove- Dollarton have often spotted eagles flying around, particularly in the areas of Cates Park, the Burrard Band Reserve and the golf course. We all assumed that the Immigrant opinion opposed Dear Editor: Bob Hunter keeps trying to seli us on the idea of bringing in tens of millions of immigrants until the population of Canada increases tenfold. It is unfortunate for him that according to any available opinion poll, most Canadians no longer buy the argument that happiness and prosperity come in direct pro- portion to the number of people you have in the land. Since geniuses unrecognized at home, I suggest to Bob that he may try his idea on the governments of other ‘‘empty” northern countries such as Greenland, Sweden, Norway and the Soviet Union. After all, his rule for minimum population den- sity tends to prove that more than 500 million people need to be ad- mitted into Siberia alone! R. J. Matthei / North Vancouver DRAPERIES BY S. All the unknowns, though, leave me with a very uneasy feeling. Just what is the rush to develop this particular piece of land? The tree alone that the eagles nest in is a valuable natural heritage to every resident of the North Shore because of its size (7% ft. cir- cumference, 180 ft. tall) and age (350 to 400 years). There just aren't many of these left! 7 ~ Sunday, Nov~mber 29, 1987 - North Shore News 1 Therefore why not give the tree and the eagles as much of a chance as possible to survive in this area rather than forcing them to some place else? I truly hope Mayor Baker and council will slow down and think this one through very carefully, us- ing all the expertise that is avaiJable in the field today, because they will have only one chance to make the right decision!
