NORTH VANCOUVER-LOHSDALE SUSHI HAPPY HOUR | MV City Ald. Bill Bell seeks NDP candidacy in new riding NORTH VANCOUVER City alderman Bill Bell has declared he will seek the NDP candidacy in the new provincial riding of North Vancouver-Lonsdale. By EVELYN JACOB Bell, 35, and David Schreck, 42, who ran twice as the NDP can- didate in North Van- couver-Seymour riding and feder- ally in North Vancouver in 1984, are the first two to announce their candidacy. Bell, a longtime North Van- couver resident, said he has been considering seeking noraination since the creation of a new North Vancouver riding was recommend- ed by Judge Thomas Fisher. “When David (Schreck) an- nounced he would run it galvaniz- ed me into taking the final step,” said Bell, who made his intentions known officially last week. He said: he decided to run because .‘*? like North Vancouver, I don’t Eke the Social Credit gov- emment and I believe I’m electable in the new riding.” The riding, which becomes o- ficial in January, encompasses the area beginning at the midpoint of Lions Gate Bridge, ruaning along Highway 99 to Marine Drive. It then heads west to Capilano River; north on the river to Highway 1; then east and south to the mid- point of Second Narrows Bridge, and then west through the harbor to the starting point. Between 30,000 to 35,000 cligible voters live in North Vancouver-Lonsdale. Both North and West Vancouver have traditionally elected Social Credit candidates — with three prominent members currently holding seats in the provincial legislature. The last time North Vancouver elected an NDP can- didate was in 1972, when Colin Gabelmann won the riding of North Vancouver-Seymour. "A Place To Go a Despite recent history, Bell beiieves his chances of winning are good. NORTH Vancouver Ald. Bill Bell -o- ‘For the first time this is a win- naive riding for the New Demo- crats.”’ “For the first time this is a win- nable riding for the New Demo- crats,’’ said Bell, pointing ovt that the NDP finished only six per cent behind Social Credit in the area _that would be the new riding of Lonsdale in the last election. There is litte support atnong Social Credit MLAs for changing North and West Vancouver from three constituencies to four. Angus Ree, North Vancouver- Capilano MLA, told the News last year that the changes ‘‘just aren’t necessary,’’ and that neither he, nor North Vancouv'r-Seymour MLA Jack Davis nor West Van- couver-EZowe Sound MLA John Reynolds saw any practical reason for another seat. Bell, however, says the new riding opens up the possibility for stronger leadership — leadership that he says has been sorely lacking from the three Socred members. “We've had serious problems on the North Shore that the provincial See NV LAW OFFICE 986-8600 #300-233 W.1st, North Vancouver ng Together” CHERRY BOUTON 50% ot ALL SUSHI Try our rainbow roll — a deliciously colourful roll of sea-eel, cucumber, salmon, snapper and egg and_ spinach, or rnushroom sushi with shitake Monday-Thursday 9-10:30 p.m. mushzooms.
