The banners depict 11 different themes reflecting familiar scenes in West Vancouver. Each is encircled in a stylized ‘*75"' logo. More than 100 organizations are involved in preparations for the year’s celebrations. The first major event is the presentation of the city's coat-of- arms on Sunday, March 15. Lieutenant-Governor, His Honor Robert G. Rogers will receive the THE COAT OF ARMS of West Vancouver coat-of-arms from Dr. Conrad Swan, York Herald of Arms, and will formally present it to Mayor Lanskail for the municipality. Swan is a native of B.C. and the only Canadian ever appointed to the. College of Arms. He’ has assisted the municipality in com- pleting the registration. The lengthy process which began four years ago, is referred to as ‘‘peti- tioning the Royal College of Arms for the granting of armorial bear- ings by letters patent.”’ The crest and lettering in the let-. ter patent are drawn by hand on parchment. They took up to 18 months to prepare following ap- proval by the Earl Marshall the Queen’s Lieutenant in armorial matters. Heraldry was originally created in the 12th century as a system of symbolism used to identify knights on the battlefield or in tourna- ments. Cities began to recognize that it could serve some of their legal needs as well as providing a colorful focus for’ ‘community pride.- By: the mid-1400s many European cities had adopted arms and-used them on seals, flags and public buildings. . The Arms of ‘West Vancouver are based on a design by the late Alfred Bibbs, adopted in 1936 with the motto: By Wisdom And Courage. The design which had been usid for nearly 50 years has been enriched with additional elenients. The silver cougars with their col- Jars of fir and golden cones repre- sent the varied fauna found throughout West Vancouver. The compartment on which the shield and the supporters rest symbolizes the rocky shoreline with mountain streams flowing down to meet the waters of the inlet. Experts agree that this new coat of arms is one of the most beautiful to be devised in Canada in recent years. The decision to have it registered was taken about five years ago when a company requested ap- proval to reproduce it on teacups and saucers for retail distribution. When it was discovered that the crest was not officially registered, its value was reconsidered and the request was withdrawn. The public is invited tc the cer- emony at 2:45 p.m., this Sunday at West Vancouver Secondary School Theatre.
