Oe Se COREE ag TE I nn eee ten riometown bought by NORTH Vancouver's Beaver Lumber Co. Ltd. is on the move into Hometown country. By TIMOTHY RENSHAW When the lights were shut off for the last time Saturday night at its 1420 Fell Avenue store, the North Shore’s Beaver store closed the door on 25 years of business in the same location and threw open the door to a new era down the street in the massive building at 915 West First that has until today housed the North Shore’s Hometown outlet. The move is part of an Oct. 1 merger that has seen the Beaver Lumber Co. chain take over 11 Hometown outlets in Saskat- chewan, Alberta and B.C. and 15 Crownmart home improvement centres in Saskatchawan and Alberta. - Beaver, which began in Western Canada when the first store open- ed in Saskatchewan in 1906, now has 180 stores, including 18 in B.C. Vice-president of Beaver’s B.C. division Bruce Allen said Thursday the takeover decision was made primarily, ‘‘because we wanted to grow as a business in the West.” He said North Shore Beaver and Hometown customers would benefit equally from the merger. Beaver customers, he said, would have the convenience of shopping in the wide open spaces eaver Lumber of the old Hometown location “and they will see a much wider assortment of hard goods.”’ People who have patronized Hometown will, he said, see an in- crease in lumber and building ma- terials and an emphasis on other Beaver trademarks such as cus- tomer service and product value. “It will be a great combina- tion,” Allen said, ‘‘the best of both worlds.”” He said some products such as exercise equipment, automotive paraphernalia and some electronic items that do not fit the Beaver image would be phased out. Allen added that no jobs would be lost as a result of the merger. The old Hometown location, he said, should be fully ‘‘Beaverized’’ by the end of November. 25 - Sunday, November 23, 1986 — North Shore News SENIOR ANNUITY & R.R.I.F. As word processors they are the most useful office aid invented since the typewriter, © * Starting your own business will involve considering whether you. should enter the computer age and, if so, what you need. You must be clear about what you want the computer to do for you. ' The selection is mind-boggling, the technical language daunting, the software programs wide-rang- ing and still expensive enough that they must be bought with care. It is wise to consult a profes- sional with business experience be- fore you visit the ccmputer showroom. A chartered accoun- tant, once he knows about your business ‘and its objectives, can advise you on the sort of equip- ment and programs you shculd consider. When you have what ca- pabilities you need you can start the purchasing process. Micro-computers (and mini- computers) have a number of features that make them suitable for small business operators. - Mini-computers are simple to _ operate and program; they are designed for direct entry and checking of data with multi-user access. You can handle large vol- umes of work quickly, such as immediate updating of transaction .records, and equipment can be ad- ded as required. Micro-computers, as their name implies, are small and bring the power of computing to your desktop. They are simple to operate, a major factor in their great popularity. When you choose a computer avoid those that are unnecessarily complex. Choose one that can grow with your business and one that has technical support from the vendor. An alternative to owning your own computer is to use a service bureau. You send your data to the bureau for processing. You can often install your own terminal in your office and access the bureau’s computer on a time-sharing basis by telephone lines. uw SAVE $$$! a * Acceptable’ Business Practice i Successful Publishing Co. o BH * Detail Letter Tax Law Firm zB.
