28 - Fridey, September 12, 1986 - North Shore News | Discover the Titanic A MAJOR gathering of specialists in ocean technology and ocean development will be held during Expo’s Underwater and Offshore Resources Specialized Period. A public presentation on the discovery of the wreck of the Titanic is featured as part of a special opening night program. The marine Technology Society B.C. Section and the University of British Columbia are iead orga- nizers for Sea The Future — Perspectives in Ocean Technology. The symposium, endorsed by Expo 86, will take place September 12 to 14 , opening Expo’s sine day Underwater Period. The opening session on September 12 at the Hotel Van- couver will feature Jean Jarry of France, co-leader of the Titanic expedition. Jarry will discuss fin- ding the Titanic and examine re- cent developments in its explora- tion. An 18-foot Bassett and Lowke model of the RMS Titanic and an exhibit of artifacts and memorabilia will be on display at the Hotel Vancouver for the event. Bertha Marshall, the last remain- ing survivor of the Titanic in Canada will be present during the session. Other program highlights in- clude: World premier National Geographic footage of deep ocean sharks, presented by Emory Kristof. Kristof dove with Pisces VI off Bermuda this summer and filmed sharks at 2,000 feet. Slide presentation on the oceans .from space by NASA shuttle astronaut Kathryn Sullivan. Sullivan flew in space with Cana- dian Marc Garneau. A look at the future of ocean technology by Grant Gross and Jim McFarlane. Gross is head of the Oceans Division of the Na- tional Science Foundation (Washington, D.C.) and McFarlane is president of Interna- tional Submarine Engincering (Port Moody). Phil Nuytten, inventor of the Newtsuit and president of Can- Dive Services of North Vancouver, will be the master of ceremonies for the evening. ; Advance tickets for the opening night program are $15 through VTC-CBO outlets while they last. She will talk on ‘Beyond Crash Diets and Denial’ and explore op- timal health and well-being. Lopez-Taylor is the director of Balanced Living Weight Control Centre with locations in Richmond and White Rock. Alena Branda is a member of the school of physical education at UBC, who specializes in all aspects of health and physical fitness. She earned her physical educa- tion degree in Czechoslovakia and did doctorate studies there prior to coming to Canada. A former competitive alpine skier and gymnast Branda_ par- ticipates in all seasonal sports and is a top ranking competitor in cross country skiing in her age group. Her subject matter will include the diversity of fitness as well as fitness and the aging process. Betty Latimer is a master fitness leader registered with the BCRA and is the owner of Be-Fit Enter- prises Ltd. She specializes in aerobics suited to all levels and ages and has pioneered the use of wrist and ankle weights as a com- ponent of the exercise class. Latimer will speak on the four components of fitness that lead to total fitness and energy to spare. The cost is $20 advanced regis- tration, or $25 after Sept. 13.
