Mom hooked on Dear Editor: Back in September 1 made a promise to my _ three children, that because we were moving to a new area and a new school, I would cease my involvement in schoo! politics. Basically, this promise was made because my views were causing some uncomfortable situations for them. : Like 2 good mom, I stayed away from. anything con- troversial and went to the school with‘a smiling face. and clenched teeth. 1 was quite successful until tonight when I accidentally watched. the school board meeting on Cable 10. The same players, the same set, until an ab- ’ solutely disgraceful little film was shown. A film which we were assured was unbiased and non-partisan which is to say the earth is flat and pink elephants fly. The film was produced by the BCSTA and by its end it was clear to see Thanks to Dear Editor: April 15 to 21 was the week that Canadians joined together in formally recognizing the services pro- vided by volunteers to their local communities, In British Columbia and the Yukon, Canadian Cancer Society volunteers spent $500,000 in services for cancer patients and their families as well as giving 100,000 hours of one to one emotional support. Volunteers also inform the public about the prevention and control of cancer em- a yO Under the present law, the Province can set up such homes in municipalities pro- vided they meet the local bylaw requirements. In the District of North Vancouver, these homes are allowed under the “definition of a family’’ bylaw which permits that the BCSTA & BCTF were indeed cosy and com- putible bed partners being vigorously raped by the wick- ed Socred government. The opening statement that only B.C, had an educationa! conflict is a gross lie, as was pointed out by one member of the audience who mention- ed, Great Britain, Australia and our neighboring state of Washington were also under “conflict” in education. The only Board member with the guts to speak up against the film was Margie Goodman who mentioned several serious facts which were not mentioned in the film such as declining enrol- ment and the fact teachers’ salaries took up 80% of the school budget and had risen by just.over 100%, but ther anyone should realize that facts, figures and polls can be twisted to favour any .point of view. Trustee Goodman was also the only one who volunteers phasizing healthy lifestyle choices and early diagnosis and treatment. Some 5,000 other volunteers annually raise the funds which sup- port these programs and more than $2 million of research in B.C. The staff of the Canadian Cancer Society wish to publicly thank the volunteers for their contribution and for the opportunity of work- ing with the in them control of cancer. Phyllis H. Usually the number of mentally han- dicapped persons is between 4 and 5 with sufficient per- sonnel to fook: after them. Other such homes which have been established in North Vancouver have proven to be politics once again called for a referendum, the only true way the taxpayer can give an honest valuation, but of course, North Van can expect a hot day at Christmas before that time comes. And after all, as Rev. Dungey pointed out, what can we expect from someone educated under a Republican American system?! Well, I guess the mistake of thinking freedom of opinion and speech was equa} on both sides of the border without fear of per- sonal attack. I’m sorry, kids, this is one promise Mom has to break; after all your future & educa- tion are, indeed-in the wrong hands. Sue Cook . North Vancouver ay extraordinarily successful and have given the handicap- ped people the opportunity to make rapid progress away from institutional. living. These homes are regular residences indistinguishable from other homes on the outside. Experience has shown the initial fears sometimes ex- pressed by neighborhoods are unfounded. The specially selected residents in these homes are gentle, quiet pceo- ple who harm no one and quietly go about their own business under supervision. Far from constituting a threat, they have often im- proved the atmosphere in ex- isting neighborhoods, ) - Friday, May 24, 1985 - North Shore News rere especially where the neighbors have reached out and opened their hearts to these most unfortunate peo- ple and made them welcome. The North Shore Associa- tion for the Mentally Han- dicapped, a volunteer organization dedicated to assisting the mentally han- dicapped, has gone out of its way to accommodate the neighbors in the present case. There is 24-hour staffing by qualified individuals and a full range of day programs allowing the residents to be away from the home during normal working hours. The residenis are always accom- panied by staff when outside the home. They have provid- challenge ed landscaping and built a 6 foot fence completely enclos- ing the backyard and provid- ed screening even though they are short of funds and are under no obligation to do so. It is my belief that we have to accept the world as it really is rather than isolate ourselves from it. The men- tally handicapped have every right to be treated the same way as any other citizens. I also believe that the fives of those who accept mentally handicapped people as their neighbors will be enriched and rewarded by the experience.
