Conch, whose pearly, pastel-
colored shell, is sold to
tourists in Florida and the
Caribbean by the boatload.
may be nearing extinction, a
University of Florida
researcher warned Tuesday.

“The conch is being ex-
terminated throughout West
Indian waters,” said Dr.
Fred Thompson, a
malacolcgist (specialist in
molluscs) at the Flonda
State Museum. “There is a
very realistic possibility of
them disappearing.”

Thompson compared the
pheht of the conch to that of
the snowy egret, which was
hunted almost to extinction
near the turn of the century
to supply plumes for
women's hats.

He estimated that the
conch population in the
Canbbean ts only 10-20 per
cent of what it was a decade
ago and that. if current
trends are not reversed,
there may be no conch left in
another 10 years

“Shell collecting is a multi-
mullion dollar industry in this
country and it has an impact
on a world-wide scale,” he
said.

“This activity is being
supported by the people who
buy seashells.” he said.
“When it comes to making a
dollar, there are no ethical
limits and that is just as true
for the shell industry today
as it was for the plume in-
dustry of the last century.”

There are six species of
conch, the large marine
snails with ornate = shells,
found in the waters off
Flomda and West Indian
islands. Large mounds of
their shells can be seen at
many roadside shell stands in
Flonda.

Two species, the queen
and milk conch, are
gathered for the large
muscle of the “foot.” which
is popular in chowders or as
steaks mn seafood
restaurants. West Indians
eat all six species, Thompson
said. .

Conch take at least five
years to reach reproduction
age and they are _ being
collected faster than they
reproduce.

Hirohito celebrates
79th birthday

Hirohito, the once living-god
reduced to a symbol of his
nation in post-World War Il
Japan but sull the world’s
longest reigning monarch,
celebrated his 79th birthday
Tuesday in excellent health.

Hirohito’s chamberlains
said the monarch was in
good health after recovering
from two colds this year.

Imperial Palace officials
said Hirohito received an
electric shaver as a birthday
present from Empress
Nagako, 77. His’ cham-
berlains said he replied, “I
wish you (good) health
forever.”

The emperor. ac-
companied by the empress
and other members of the

impenal family. appeared
four times on the balcony of
the palace he has occupied
since Christmas Day 1926, to
receive greetings from his
loyal] well-wishers.

Hirohito, the 126th em-
peror in the unbroken im-
perial court history, has
been on the throne for 54
years.

devotes most of his private
time to biological research,
his chamberlains said. He
has co-authored a book, due
out this autumn, on 600
varieties of plants he has
studied in and around his
villa in Shimoda, west of
Tokyo. -
