A2 - Sunday, April 3, 1983 - North Shore News by Bob Hunter Bob’s just not with it IT’S ONE of the most dreaded moments of the year. I put it off until I can no longer handle the guilt of seeing my beloved editor squinting through an infra-red lens in an effort to decipher the faint markings on the pages I hand in. Time to change the You'd think, therefore, that I'd be eager to méve on to word processors and computers, escaping the brutal world of ribbons and type bars and keys that go clickity-click. ‘Age of Most of my old newsaper cronies ve entered the ideo Display Terminals and seem to have worked out comfortable emotional and psychological night, but that’s another story. I guess this is my destiny: to be out of phase with my tame. All thumbs, but afraid of Pac Man. All I can say is this: writing’s like being a gun- slinger. They don’t. Thus, as I gingerly sit myself in front of my battered old Underwood portable and lift the top part, exposing the grinning teeth of the keys and the two "mocking eyes of the ribbon spools, I always say to myself, “Big fella, this time it’s gonna work.” It doesn't. ‘Within minutes, I have already dropped one doohickey or another down . into the rat trap of the machine’s innards. A spool will have escaped from my fingers. and wobbled across the floor to the other side of the room, leaving miles of hideously messy ribbon strewn in its wake. Failing cither of these events, the ribbon will cling to the machine as if uf- willing to end a _ happy symbiotic relationship. Invariably, I put the new ribbon on the wrong spool. I usually don’t discover this until I have already put the lid back on, smearing the cover with inky fingerprints. At least half an hour has in his hands. Y*know? gone by and here I am, once , again, beating my little fists against the stained tabletop, cursing Gutenberg for having displaced the quill as literature’s rightful tool. I'm one of these people who don’t have any | mechanical knack what- soever. I once met a guy — real weird, this one — who examined the veins of my _ wrist and concluded that I -. had not reincarnated since - before the Industrial Revolution. : “You probably can’t relate to machinery at all,” he said. = I gave him a quarter. : It’s as good an excuse as « any.
