Jobless builders could hit % ° WINNIPEG (UPC) - Unemployment in Canada’s construction industry could hit 20 per cent this year, the president of the Canadian Construction Association said Monday. Bob Nuth, speaking at a news conference, said about 150,000 construction workers will be idle this year. The association, which represents about 25,000 companies in non-residential construction, had previously figured about 16 per cent of construction workers would be without jobs. “If things stay the same or worsen, both these things will come into play - layoffs and bankruptcies,” Nuth said. Atlantic Canada will have the worst unemployment in the construction industry - as high as 45 per cent in Newfoundland, Nuth said. Large cities such = as Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Edmonton. Calgary and Vancouver have so. far escaped the worst effects of the recession, he said About 10 per cent of construction workers in Alberta are idle and “for them, that’s high.” In most parts of Canada, unem- ployment will reach about 30 percent. He said declining con- fidence in the federal government's management of the economy ts largely to blame for the number of people out of work. The November budget “had nothing positive in it to encourage investment,” raising the question whether “the management of the economy is in good hands.” Nuth said. The non-residential construction industry “1s very much at the mercy of those who spend the money and make investments,” he said, and those people are not opumisuc the economic climate will improve Nuth said the collapse of the $14 bilhhon Alsands project and postponement of the $40 billion Alaska Highway natural gas pipeline had more of a “symbolic” cttect ‘There hay been a ten denoy to overestimate the LET prac. of the mega projyects ~ he said of the large energy proyects had gone ahead as planned. at would have Urenewed some faith an the Nath country | sand Short on hardware, our boys are best OTTAWA (UPC) - While lacking in vital anti-mussile defences and other top grade equipment, Canada’s navy boasts some of the finest fightung men in the world, Defence Minister Galles Lamontagne said Monday Speaking with newsmen outside the House of Commons.
