By not selling the animals I can be choosy.” Mrs. Orr and supporters of her work do their best to keep the problem down. All the animals are spayed or neutered by the time they leave her care and she bears half the cost herself. Even so, she seems to be fighting a losing battle and the number of unwanted cats on the North Shore is higher than it’s ever been. Lately, Mrs. Orr has had to close her doors to receiving any more cats and reluctantly tell people that she just cannot take in any more. She attributes the situation to changes in population and = ac- commodation patterns. “I uhink it is a case of the many many apartments being built where people are moving in and are not allowed to have an animal. You get a dense population of people in an area and you are going to have a denser population of animals. TOO MANY CATS “I have never had as many cats as I have now and we are at a crisis level in North Vancouver.” “It is hard to tell people to take them to them vet and have them put down properly as that is the only answer. You can't just leave them on the street. “It is hideous for us to live around here and have a whole bunch of animals hanging around sides of apartment blocks with no one to feed them. so everyone should have their animals spayed and neutered.” About 500 animals pass through Mrs. Orr's care every year, at a cost of about $1,000 a month for feeding. neutering and other medical expenses. A group of volunteers heip her raise the money by holding bazaars but she says: “Funds are always needed to continue this work .” Right now she is looking for someone to help her take calls regarding the animals, as well as her usual requirements of income and people willing to look after animals in their homes on a short-term basis As for her own Christmas. is much hke any other day for Mrs. Orr “Im not a people person,” she ex- Cold weather poison Ths 1s the time of year when many pets will die needlessly because of carelessness in the handling of antifreeze While) most people aware that antifreeze is a potsonous substance. many iwnore the potentially tragic effects of small amount spilled in the garage for example leaving a As littl: as one teaspoon ful of antifreeze will kill a cat This amount could be ticked off a after cats wet feet walking through = the Both cats and dogs find the sweet taste of cthylene glycol tantifreese) enti ing spilled hiquid BH ¢ Veterinarians «au {hon responsible petoowners apainst letting thei cals and Aops roam free Non pet owners whe are winterisinp thea machinery automobiles on other Coohmng systems should clean up any spilled hquid. and keep unused antifreeze in a place inaccessible to tand children) pets GOLDEN CAPITAL4- CHINESE RESTAURANT *tully licenced 4k. open 4 11 pm Sunday 4 1Opm 2168 Marine Drive West Van 926-6037 og HARLOW’S ‘New Year’s Eve Dinner! ~® Live entertainment @ Limousine service: Dinner For Two » Prawns : Salad - Chateaubnand + Dessert - Coffee, Tea - Bottle of Champagne reservations 1405 Marine Dr., West Van 922-3412 Harlow's is pleased to announce.
