‘rive: to British Columbia in July. Our main problem ts lodging (we don't camp). Will there be a problem with the law if all of us share the same room? ‘What can we expect as to additional charges for our son? Would it be cheaper looking for house-keeping units instead of motel-hoiel enits?. Have you any suggestions bow we can save money on our trip? m How can I get a list of hotel accommodations with prices from Ontario to B.C.? ANSWER: Anyone who gets excited about a family sharing a motel deserves our contempt. When you think about the other possibilities, from hookers to non-stop gambling or pornographic movies that are offered in some hotels, your family group is tame! I guarantee no problems! Charges for your son will vary from zilch to $6 — but, if you appear at your chosen destination before four p.m., you can shop around and find accommodation that suits you. Housekeeping units are cheaper, especially in small towns — and better value. Often, the food in restaurants is marginal and hard to find. Even if you are “caught short”, an electric fry-pan, kettle and a few basic supplies will provide a decent breakfast! I've had no guilt complexes about unloading our car in places like Los Angeles — com- plete with my own ap- pliances, and feeding my family from supplies “I've purchased the night before. I bring along a MHght, styrofoam cooler and use the “party ice” to keep milk, eggs and other perishables cold. Grocery shopping in downtown metro areas is difficult, so stock-up in the suburbs. Pack a box with the necessaries — salt, pepper, Spices, condiments and your best knives (for paring, cutting and = spreading), plastic cutlery and paper plates and cups. Include a tiny, portable barbeque. After we chose a motel, I left Brian to organize. the kids into a swimming party while I headed for the nearest super market. I bought food to barbeque for eaten the next day, plus breakfast goodies which I stewed-up. at dismal hours next morning. We raided the ice-machines to keep our little cooler fresh. . Occasionally, we stopped at hamburger stands ‘along the way. Most were_ awful! When a group of “kids, ranging in age from 12 to 5, preferred my home-made meals you can judge for yourself. Big cities are expensive BUT — many families are registering with the local tourist offices to offer low- cost accommodation in their homes. British Columbia has a register of houses that will provide bed-and-breakfast for decent prices. Other provinces are experimenting with the same idea. Write the tourist offices in each province you intend to visit for this information. Usually, you will get such a . huge package of in- formation, it will take days to sort it all out. Be explicit when you ask for homes providing a bed = and breakfast accommodation! DEAR BARBARA: We live in Detroit, Mich. and discovered your column while visiting in Kitchener at Christmastime. We have always wanted to visit British Columbia, especially Vancouver and Victoria. Also, what sort of weather will we encounter in May? As I write this, from North Vancouver, the sun is shining on green grass and the first spring flowers. In March. , The interior of B.C. is still cold but by May can be sweltering. Pack sweaters and raincoats as it can still get chilly at night and the Lower Mainland area gets plenty of rain. The Lower Mainland is almost totally free of mosquitoes or blackflies but Northern areas have their share. If you are planning to hike in the forests, bring or buy insect spray and use it liberally on exposed areas, especially behind your ears. Our “no seeums” — the local name for blackflies — are an educated bunch. They know that most people have nice juicy skin back there and forget to spray necks and behind ears.
