GIRLS’ CHAMPIONSHIPS Handsworth takes v’bail HANDSWORTH ROYALS, led by tournament most valuable player Jenny Rauh and first ail- star Michelle Lachmann, won the 1988 B.C. high school ‘‘AA”’ girls’ volle,?.all championships in Co- quitlam by defeating Max Cameron of Powell River 15-12, 9-15, 14-16, 15-7, 15-11 in a tense final match. The win capped an unbelievable season in which Handsworth won five of the six invitational tourna- ments they entered: Terry Fox, New Westminster, University of Victoria, University of B.C., Douglas College. Then they tock the North Shore championship tourney which in- cluded three of the province’s other top ten ranked teams. Handsworth was ranked first or second all season long. Overall they lost only five of 71 matches played during the season, including DASH THROUGH THE SNOW! The "“M” stands for Mud. The ‘“'S” stands for Snow. The only other losses came at the Sutherland tournament and in a league match against Argyle when Rauh was ill. Argyle’s Pipers, who qualified for the B.C. championships by winning a wildcard tourney involv- ing the runner-up teams from four local zones, captured third place in the province. Christine Thomas was named to the B.C. first all-star team and Carli Richter to the second team. The strong showing of North Shore teams at the provincial level this year is a continuation of the dominance displayed over the past few years. Sentinel won the ‘‘AA’’ tourney last year while West Vancouver was second in the ‘‘AA’’ classification.
