LL: Ané rst thingy that oE- comes apparent is the depth of their ‘British connections.’ The line-up of labels includes _such_ solid- performers as - Ballantynes, Rodex, Bur- .berrys, Alan Paine, Dereta, 2 Gloverall, Jaeger and a host _of others that have been synonymous with British fashion for generations, and a few new ones that are making friends for British “fashion with new designs . that compare favorably with -the leading designers from other countries. _ Any. woman who is inter- - ested in’ what is new (and *- warm) in fashion will find . answers at Chapman’s. For people wishing to enter the fashion industry, the study of it begins at Capilano College. Students from the lower mainland’s June graduating | classes, mixed with retrain- ing: adults and those from other provinces converge on the campus in April, May and August for pre-accep- tance interviews. The suc- cessful candidates begin an intensive seven course per semester programme in Sep- tember, working Fridays and Saturdays as well, as part of the built-in apprenticeship requirement. The course consists of two years of work on campus before receiving the college diploma in Retail Fashion. First year consists of basic ‘background courses in..a history of costume, personal development and modelling, clothing design and con- struction, basic English, consumerism,: textiles, and seminars on the work exper- ience. In second | year, students study merchandis- ing, marketing, merchandise display, business manage- ment, retailing, advertising and promotion, e ,ookkeeping. The department operates a small boutique called ‘*Maradadi,’’ which — sells college T shirts, scarves, jewelery, tote bags, and sundrics. The merchandising class decides on the inven- tory, manages the shop, monitors the books, works out their own system of inventory control, decides on markdowns and eventually clears all the merchandise before the end of term. the ‘‘Cave’’ supper club. In. two evenings of exotica, the students modelled the gar- ments of the Vancouver coutourier industry. The production of the show taught the students the elements of fashion . show. organization, and the: motion of the show tested their knowledge of advertis- ing. As a_ vehicle for learning, the fashion show provided a service to the fashion industry in Van- couver, by giving Vancouver designers “~ show. case for their work. fashion yon flair Jewels by. Clothing design and con- struction is placed in the selection of courses to give students a backzround in the merchandise they will, be handiing in the future.
