July 28, ing Lynn Valley as MY WIFE and I are one of those couples considered to be almost an endangered species on the North Shore: we were both born here. By Paul Hughes Contributing Writer In fact, we are such a rarity that, if we were spotted owls, Greenpeace would have halted all new-home construction by now and sealed off both bridges, en- couraging us to go off into. the trees somewhere to breed in peace. Strictly speaking, | suppose, my wife's citizenship is in question, since she was born — two months early — in the back of a cab halfway across the Lions Gate Bridge. (i throw this historical tidbit in because it was the last re- corded instance when she was ever on time for anything, much less early.) Regardless of her true origins, we both recall many of the same things from the dim past, and if yow ll! hang on a minute while 1 put my teeth in, Il share a few with you. For instance, being Catholic, we can remember making the weekly trek every Friday to the old fish and chip, joint at 19th Street and Lonsdale Avenue. We would stare out the wins" dows, dtculiag with un-Cathalic dribbles of envy as every Protes- tant from Deep Cove to Horse- shoe Bay drove down Lonsdale Avenue on their way to King’s Drive-In Eatery on Marine Drive for a deluxe hamburger and fries. We can also remember paying tolis on the Lions Gate Bridge; when the Second Narrows Bridge didn’t exist; and when North Vancouver had a drive-in movie theatre (and the fess prying into that the better). Although we can’t personally reminisce about the strect cars that used to ply our byways, we sometimes pretend to, in order to * make our older friend, Darlene, ' feel better. _ 1 grew up in Lynn Valley, and this makes any memories | have of that area doubly fascinating because at that time the Valley was- considered a wild outpost with about 2s much connection to North Van proper as Bangladesh. Only real leoney-tunes lived way aut there, I suppose there was some justification fer this attitude. After all, wasn't Lynn Valley the habitat of that first class nut-case, Nature Boy? ; God knows what his real name was, but I remember this legend- ary character lived all alone in a shack on 2%h Street and some- where, He wore his hair down to his shoulders which, in the sparsely-domed, crew-cut era of the ’50s, was definitely uncool. His yard was littered with pro- test signs, warning passers-by to all manner of unlikely doom, such as the dangers of nuclear fallout and the global effect of industrial pollution. He never possessed a car, or to my knowledge, ever rode the cr- ratic, once-every-solstice transit system of the day. He maintained, you sec, that the internal combus- tion engine was the curse of mod- em civilization, and rather than poilute the air with . noxious fumes, he chose to walk every- where, I often wonder where he is to- day. Probably still there — we just don’t notice hint, ° Lynn Valley was also famous for its gangs. Oh yes, we had gangs in those days too, but they had it all over these modern-day, hats-on-backwards types currently slithering through the night. At least gangs in my day had some imagination. and didn’t choose wussy names th. sound ag if they were all stringers for the Vicnna Boy’s Choir. | mean I ask you, who would you rather be mugeed by -—- The North Van Club, or the Lynn Valley Smiling Crabs Society?
