JACKIE MAXWELL can't wait to board her Vancouver-bound flight from Toronto. By Martin Millerchip NEWS THEATRE CRITIC “| get to be in a plane by myself for the equivalent of 11 hours so that | can catch up on four years’ reading,” she giggles. But it is not just the pro- spect of her husband, actor Benedict Campbell, —_ pick- ing up after their two small daughters for over a week that triggers her enthusiasm. British Colu:nbia is the on- . ly province in Canada where Maxwell has not directed in the 15 years since she emigrated from the U.K., al- though she came clase two years ago — until pregnancy forced cancellation of plans to direct at Victoria’s Belfry Theatre. "This will be my first ex- tended stay in Vancouver and I’m really looking for- ward to it,” says Maxwell. However, there are aspects of the adjudicator's tole that have made her pause and think although she has done it before, par- ticularly during her time at the National Arts Centre. “Playing God. Literally JACKIE MAXWELL being parachuted into judge all and sundry is not a posi- tion that I'm totally comfort- able with,’ she says, sug- gesting that becoming part of the week will be more important. “To my mind, the coffee critiques are where we can get down to some interest- ing discussions as to why people did what they did and if they actually achieved what they wanted to achieve.” 7 She sees little difference between the worlds of pro- fessional and community theatre beyond a payche- que. Her roots in theatre precede her early elevation to “Equity professional’ as a child actor of 14 in Belfast. “My mother is an avid community theatre actress in ireland and some of my ear- liest memories are sitting in the audience waiting for her to finish a rehearsal so we could go home.” Maxwell got theatre training at chester University. “That's where | realized that you could do more than act. Maybe you could boss people around as well," she says jokingly about learning to direct. She was an almost instant success in Canada, working with the likes of Sharon Pollock and john Murrell. “Y was very lucky. | met some of the best very early and | just loved them and their work and their genera} enthusiasm.” Those feelings must apply to Maxwell in turn. For in- stance, George F. Walker has entrusted more of his premier productions to her ands than any other direc- tor, including Escape From Happiness, Love And Anger, Beautiful City and Criminals in Love. And that love of new work continues. She is still responsible for the development of new scripts at Factory Theatre in Toronto, where she has been artistic director for six her formal Man- “DID YOu SLEEP WELL LAST NIGHT? } RANE 8 CALE AR TC “We Want Your Bed Business” SERTA PERFECT SLEEPER (Plus Free Frarne) Serta single $495 Serta Queen $695 OTHER MAKES AT LOW PRICES | SINGLE aa Lonsdale Community Centre 2300 Lonsdale/200 bik.
