For drivers, making a right turn seems pretty sim- ple, pretty straight forward. Usually, it is, bur when it isn’t many drivers seem oblivious to anything more than the obvious. As touched on in last week's column, drivers mak- ing aright turn on a red light must yield. Further, in last week’s colunin it was the left- turners who were to be given right-of-way when ““FHrning left from Mountain Hwy onto Main Street, castbound, for the simple fact that any car potentially conflicting with such a manoeuvre was/is invariably faced with a red light (and right on a red means you wait until the area is com- pletely devoid of conflicting traffic), There are a few other sit- uations on the North Shore where this conflict occurs and is easily avoided as long as drivers remember one simple rule: If you’re required to yield, you're required to yicld to every- thing, everyone. The major conthict that often occurs here involves the left-turner and the right turner who both end up travelling up Lonsdale, northbound. At this specific juncture, furthermore, important decisions are made, Drivers decide which lane they need cto be in order to further their travels along Highway 1 castbound, in which case they need the right lane; Highway 1 west- bound, in which case they need the left lane; or simply stright north up Lonsdale. Obviously, when two cars enter this area with conflict- ing destinations in mind, someone needs to give way. As it happens, left-turners will often turn and scoot into the right lane in one continuous motion — which is noc a big deal (it’s “practi- cable") untess there is a right-turner nearby. The right-turner is sup- pose to yield ift a) he or she is turning right from a red light (which means the left- turners have an advanced- green arrow): or b) the lett- turner is already lawfully in Possession of the intersec- tion and heading for that right lane, the right-turners intended lane.
