limiting the amount of special education services the school dis-
trict will be able to provide. She estimates that the cost to the
district of providing specialized tutoring could run to S850 per
child per year.

Children with learning disabilities, said Thompson, are
“having to work so hard d just to get by. They have to work pvice
as hard as anyone else.” For that reason she, like some other
parents, believes that day tutoring is preferable.

Said North Vancouver District Parent Advisory Council
chair Barb Scobie, “they just don’t have the energy. It’s all these
poor little guys can do to get through the school day.”

Both women mention the vast array of sports and social
activities kids need to schedule alongside their tutoring | work.

“IT guess they could (work with tutors after school), Scobie
says, “but they're so incredibly. busy with sports, ballet,
karate...” Cowan said the intent is “not to prevent tutoring
from happening. Teachers always recommend it, it’s beneficial
to kids. We'd just like to see it happening outside the school.”
