We have five Cedar trees in the middie of our

¢ backyard that need to be moved in order to

accommodate a renovation to our house. They
are about &’ tafl with lots of healthy foliage.
Given that they have to be moved now, how
should it be done?

Conifers are best moved in late winter or early
spring. before they begin the new season's growth.

e@ However, given your situation, don't delay, move

them as soon as possible.

The majority of food for the tree is gathered in the
outer third of the root system, so be sure to get as
much of the ruot bail as possible, especially near the
surface of the soil. Although Cedars tend to be
shallow-rooted, relative. to other conifers, the main,
or tap root of a six-foot tree, can be as deep as five
feet.

To relocate the tree, dig a hole. Uf filled with water, it
should drain completely in less than two hours. Cut
off damaged roots cleanly. Plant too shallow rather
than too deep. The tree will settle. After placing the
tree in the hole press soil around the tree gently but
firmly to fill the hole. Don’t prune! Food is stcred in
the stems, twigs and branches. While the tree re-
establishes itself, it needs the nourishment they
provide. Mulch the base of the tree with a 5-10 cm
layer of leaf litter or wood chips. ‘This conserves
moisture, protects the root from hot and cold, and
keeps down weeds. Wator regularly, as the tree can
take up to three years to establish a new root
system, but don’t fectilize for six months. Keep grass
clear of the root circle to beyond the drip line.
