Michacl Caster, 20, and Jon Ottclo Moroury, 19, are charged with first degree mur- der and conspiracy to commit first degree murder in connec- tion with the shooting death of Mohammad Mirhadi on Feb. 28, 1997. Mirhadi, 21, was shot at close range in the head and body as he sat in 2 front seat of a packed movie theatre at Esplanade 6 Cinemas in Lower Lonsdale. The shooter fled the theatre. As reported previously in the News, the murder MO Mirhadi was shot and killed in a North Van cinema last Feb. 28. occurred a short time after Mirhadi and the two accused were allegedly involved in a quarrel at a North Vancouver mall. On Monday, abour 40 people packed a North Vancouver provincial court- room at the start of whar is scheduled to be a two-week preliminary hearing. A preliminary hearing is held to determine if there is cnough evidence to warrant a trial. Information presented at preliminary = hearings —_ is banned from publication by court order. On Monday, court specta- tors had to pass through a metal detector and be searched before being allowed to enter the courtroom. Mirhadi’s father and moth- er, Jahangir and Shahrazad, sat in the frant row of the courtroom. Like other family members and friends, Mirhadi’s parents wore large round colored pins depicting a picture of a smiling Mo Mirhadi. On the pins were the words: “We love you Mo! Justice for all.” The two accused killers sat in the prisoner’s box with three sheriffs around them. A fourth sheriff sat on the other side of the courtroom near the spectators. Caster wore a green shirt and Moroury wore a white shirt. Caster occasionally looked at courtroom = spectators, but showed little emotion. The preliminary hearing is being held before Judge Ellen Burdett. Meanwhile, Caster is also charged in connection with an unrelated = extortion — in Victoria. The alleged extor- tion took place four months before the cinema shooting. According to Victoria Police Department Detective Bill Trudeau, an owner of a 1991 Ford Mustang had to sign over his car at gunpoint during the alleged extortion. Besides Caster, a co- accused who allegedly held the gun has been charged with the extortion. The co-accused was under age 18 at the time of the crime and his name is banned from publication as required by the Young Offenders Act. The new authority’s board will consist of 12) GVRD- appointed members — one representing the North Shore — and three from the province. Increases in tax rates or bor- rowing limits will be referred to municipalities for their “consid- eration” and, through a GVRD board vote, ratification.
