40 — Wednesday, September 24, 1997 — A questi Dear Editor: How interesting to learn in a recent edition of che North Shore News that the owner of Little Rascals Daycare operates “a corpo- Fate-supported centre versus conventional government subsidized daycare.” Does this mean that Sigrid Lightfoot has rejected Wage Supplement Initiative funding from the provincial govern- ment to assist with staff salaries? Child care has long been notorious for low wages to hard-working employees and the funding made available to all licensed child care pro- grams operating prior to North Shore News north shore news MAIL BOX October 1995 has helped bring salaries up to a more acceptable level. As the — advertisement clearly explained, — Little Rascals Daycare is relying on private sector funding, so we can assume that the owner operator is ensuring that the hard-working prefessionals at her centres are being paid worthy wages from her own pocket? This, of course, would also apply to the Infant Toddler Incentive Grant, which is also available to all licensed child care programs that have spaces for children under three. The goal of this grant is to Shope i Home i “OP Campers NORTH VAN COUVER > 400 Brooksbank Ave., #180 980-6312 1887 Marine Drive 986-8567 f chi offset the high costs involved in caring for infants and tod- diers. Ms. Lightfoot and Chemex must certainly have a healthy relationship if they have decided to forgo their ability to access these dollars tao. As to the reference to “conventional government subsidized daycare” it does not exist in B.C. None of the grants that are available from the Ministry for Children and Families contribute to the day-to-day operation of any centre. In a recent letter to the Early Childhood Educators of B.C., David Gilbert, Director of Child id care Care Services says, “As with any grant, the Infant Toddler Incenrve Grant has never been ait entitlement ... and as such should not be included in a centre’s budget forecast.” Let us hope that Sigrid Lightfoot will confirm these facts or put those of us in the child care community straight about the status of her centre and how it differs from others that are struggling to survive. As for the “concept of tak- ing the babysitting out of daycare to create a stimulat- ing environment” ~~ well, I'm still trying to figure that one out!
