Last of the romantics Daniel Day-Lewis, Madeleine Stowe siar in Michael (Miami Vice) Mann’s epic adventure ’ The Last of the Mohicans * *% * (20th Century Fox} Rated 14 years (at the Park & Tilford, Granville, Oakridge, Scott, Station Square, Clearbrook, Harris Road and Coquitlam cinemas) IKE A knight in shining buckskin, Nathaniel “Hawkeye” Poe (Daniel Day-Lewis) runs, leaps and makes with flintlock to save damsels in distress. And goed thing tao for the English Munroe women. After all, it's 1757 in the war-torn American colonies. Hoping for an adventure during their visit (and they get it), sisters Cora (Madeleine Stowe) and Alice (odhi May) make prime rescue bait as the English, the French and the occasional indian war party go at it hammers and tomahawks over who owns what. Of course, Hawkeye can’t fight them all on his own. His adoptive father, Ckingachgook (Russell Means) throws a mean axe, while brother Uncas (Eric Schweig) takes the fragile Alice under his brawny wing. A stiff British officer, Duncan Heywood (Steven Waddington), daesn’t take tco kindly to this fraternizing with the ‘‘com- moners,”’ even if the dynamic trio saved their scalps from: Huron at- tacks. But the major is a minor prob- fem compared with Magua (Wes Studi). The embittered Indian scout hates the Munroes thanks to their father’s actions on the battlefield. Like all serious A-types, when he voclaims, “I will eat his heart,”’ it’s not just an idle menu selection. Historically accurate? Sure, but director/co-writer Michael Mann seems more concerned in making a soaring romantic adventure. Cinematographer Dante Spinotti captures the majestic forest’s splendor while Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman complement the film’s unabashed iove story with a lush score. And just to keep it from getting too Harlequin-y, there’s a fair bit of violence. Well-acted, good- looking entertainment. Mr. Saturday Night « » (Col- umbia) Rated Mature (at the Park & Tilford, Granville, Oakridge, Scott, Station Square and Clear- brook cinemas) Billy Crystal’s first hat trick asa wtiter/director/star is a mediocre drama with a lot of funny iines. He plays brash Buddy Young Jr., a $0-so stand-up who takes five decades to warm up into a decent Tim Beil FILM REVIEW human being. Until then, he dumps on everyone — except his wife Elaine (ulie Warner). Offstage, the prime targets of his insult humor are his loving brother, Stan (David Paymer), and his daughter (Mary Mara). As for his career, he doesn’t just burn his bridges behind him, he burns the ones beneath him and in front of him. Still, he’s a pretty funny guy. Nice period details in the early vaudeville and Catskill years are more authentic than the aging Choose any 4 dishes on our make-up (especially on julie Warner). Look fast for the film’s co-writers Babaloo Mandrell and Lowell Ganz as the two TV writers fired by Buddy. And it’s a nice touch calling their sad-faced, red-haired com- panion “Woody” (who actuaily “did write for Sid Caesar in the ear- ly days). Still, the heavily underlined schmialtz is a major li- ability. The Comic * & & (RCA-Columbia Home Video/Image Laserdisc) Rated Mature This touching and funny Car} Reiner rnovie, rnade 20-odd years ago, makes a striking comparison to Crystal's film. The story spans a half-century in the self-destructive career of fun- ny-man Billy Bright (superbly played by Dick Van Dyke), as he toboggans from silent movie peaks to TV commercial valley. Despite his being an alcoholic, self-centred skirt-chaser, Van Dyke still makes us feel genuine pathos, especially in the final close-up of his aged face as he watches one of his “comedy classics’ on the late, late, late show.
