Fatal fire AN ELDERLY North Vancouver man died in a house fire Thursday evening. ~ North Vancouver City Fire Departraent firefighters were called to 440 West 6th St. just after 11 p.m. Upon breakieg into the home they found a 65-year-old ‘nan dead in the basement. A fire department spokesman said power to the home had been disconnected. The man had been living in the house using coa}-oil lanterns for Hight and a two-burner propane stove to cook with. -Fire investigators found rooms of the house filled with . . “gefuse that included empty Chinese food contsiners, empty catfeod tins, éntpty cigarette cartons, discarded * focd refuse, empty coal oil and propane containers. Fire damage was confined to the house’s basement. Heat and smoke caused damage throughout the housc. North Vancouver RCMP investigators say co foul play is saspected. Statistics Canada. @ Forty-five per cent of seniors spend more than 30% of their in- comes on housing-related costs. @ One in four seniors rates his heaith as fair or poor and has dif- ficulties with personal mobility. @ Less than half drive a car. @ Two-thirds of seniors are ‘widowed, divorced, ‘separated or have never married, and 85% of these are women, most of whom live alone. @ The number of seniors in North Vancouver City will grow rapidly over the next few years. The 1986 census counted 8,375 people over 55 and estimated that there would be 11,580 in 1996 and 13,560.in 2001. Lionsview member’ Sheila Gilmour said’ there should be ‘more mixed residential and com- mercial zoning so that seniors can live in the largely commercia! area close to Lions Gate Hospital. “The farther people live from outpatient services, the more strain is put on HandyDART and ‘other services,’’ she said. Gilmour added that there- was continuing demand for more HandyDART services. “It is very ‘much appreciated and very well used, but there is always the difficulty of getting, a tide when you need it,’’ she said.
