Nichol, Illustrations by Simon Ng Red Deer College Press 24 pp., $14.95 paperback HILDREN’S BOOKS so often indulge in fancy art- work that overwhelms rather than pulls the reader in, or else they subtly combine words in such a way that the adult reader must interpret the meaning and then pass this interpretation on to the child. So, as a single parent with a rap- idly developing two-year-old, the less time | spend explaining the story the better the book. bp Nichols and Simon Ng’s On the Merry-Go-Round captures in simple terms the uncomplicated way of the world. It both increases the child’s appreciation of the simple things in life and brings the adult reader back to the magic world of merry-go-rounds, the farger-than-life animals that seem to move on their own. The book sends the reader into a wonderland of soft colors and sounds. b.p. Nichols writes: ‘On the Merry-Go-Round, if | make no sound, I’m the dog in his race, and the deer in her leap, and the horse that ll ride into sleep, and the horse that i'll ride into sleep.”’ Straightforward, clear and marvel- ous. The artwork by award-winning ‘illustrator Simon Ng complements the narrative With its un- complicated style, allowing us to leap into the story along with the child. The Backward Brethers See the Lightis not one of them. The Backward Brothers See the Light is quaint, cute, but boring. Although the book is intended for children aged four and older, the pictures and story are too complex and would be more suitable for children over seven. The Icelandic names and descriptions —- bakkabraedurs Gisli, Erikur and Helgi — are authentic, but the brothers are nevertheless tiresome in their stu- pidity. - Although the illustrations have their moments, The Backward Brothers See the Light is on ihe whole unappealin — By James Hirschfeld, a single parent and student who livesin - North Vancouver.
