INSURANCE CORPORATION OF BRITISH COLUMBIA AUTO TGPIC FOR THE pasi couple of weeks we've been looking at ways you can have an [CBC claim reviewed. The series concludes this week with a look at iotc} loss claims. As with all other claims, we try to settle total losses as fairly as possible. Of course the word “fair” can mean different things to different people, which is why we have an appeals procedure to help sort out any disagreements. Generally, adjusters and estimators would write off your vehicle if they felt & could mot he returned to the road in a safe condition or at a reasonable cost. Your policy (with ICBC or any private company} gives the insurer the option to repair cr replace your vehicle. “Replace’” usually means pay- ing you a fair market value for your vehicle. The formula insurance com- panies use to determine whether a vehicle will be repaired or written off involves taking its pre-crash value and subtracting the value of the post-crash salvage. If repair costs exceed that amount, the in- surer will normally ¢iect to write the vehicle off. ICBC often uses an independent computer-based system called Autotrak to arrive at realistic values for total losses. An adjuster consults with you to develop a profite of the wrecked vehicle to determine its market value based on Autotrak’s analysis of vehicle sale prices in your area. ICBC of- fers that amount, less any deduc- tible that might apply, as settle- ment of the ciain. If you disagree with the offer, you can ask ithe adjuster’s unit manager or claim center manager to review the claim. If there is still iio settlement, the matter can be referred to arbitration. You and ICBC each appoint an independent appraiser who meet and carefully examine all the evi- dence. If they agree on a settle- ment it is binding to both parties. se { KEITH FORREST Ridgeway Mazda is pleased to annouce the appointmeat of Keith Forrest to their sales team.
