SHOT AT, BEATEN UP, ROBBED Gruelling week for cabbies By CHRIS LLOYD CAB DRIVERS at North Shore -Taxi are reported to be “a little jumpy” as a result of two of them getting robbed in the past week. One of the robbed drivers was beaten up and locked in the trunk of his cab and the other had shots fired at him as he was trying to run away from his robber. The robberies occurred within two days of one another, each after midnight and both as a result of had attempted to turn it around when he reached a gate on watershed road, at which point the car had become stuck and the man had left on foot. RCMP with tracker dogs were combing the area Friday. However, police do not believe the robberies are connected. Friday at 2:45 a.m. 25- year-old driver Mark Taylor picked up a passenger who ordered him to drive up Lillooet Road. Taylor became ap- prehensive when they passed the last homes on the road and the. passenger, said to be very drunk, told him to keep going. As they got up on the watershed road, Taylor became so concerned he stopped the cab, at which point he was robbed by the assenpe who prodiiced a handgun. Taylor ran off into the bush, with the gunman firing three warning shots near his feet as he did. The cabbie kept running and fell down a chff. He eventually made it to a phone half an hour later and reported the robbery. Pohce found the robber had driven off in the cab and picked up two men leaving the Lynnwood after mid- night. The driver is said to have realized something was wrong and attempted to radio back to base but the men grabbed the mike from him and beat him up and robbed him. The taxi control had been able to hear over the radio that something was wrong and other North Shore Taxi drivers began driving around looking for the cab. It was eventually found by one of the drivers, at Lynn Valley School, who discovered the badly beaten ‘driver of the vehicle locked in the trunk. The victim required eight stitches to his head. But when she got up and tried to close it. she felt resistance from the other side and then saw a man flee up the stairwell and on to Nelson Avenue.
