In a game for which they should have been fired-up and ready to go, the Flames for the most part lacked intensity and the aggressive hard-hitting style of play that has been their trademark. They paid the price. White Rock jumped to an early 3-0 lead, opening the scoring just 34 seconds into the game, adding a power-play goal five minutes later, then a short-handed goal at the 7:55 mark. The Flames closed out the scor- ing in the period with a power-play goal by Dave Port from Andrew Merilees and Ken Savage to trail the Whalers 3-1 after one. Six minutes into the second period the Flames pulled to within a goal as Justin George connected from Kevin Buhr. But that would be as close as they would come. Three minutes later the Whalers would score the first of four unanswered goals for a comman- ding 7-2 lead heading into the third period. White Rock added two more goals just 24 minutes into the final frame before George com- bined with Savage and Port for the *ames final goal of the evening at the 3:58 mark. The Whalers spaced three more goals at 7:42, 8:58 and 12:34 for the 12-3 final. Over the three periods White Rock outshot the Flames 43-29, Both goaltenders saw action for the Flames, with Mike Palma replacing Gary Knight in the goal early in the third period. The best-of-five serics resumes in White Rock March 11 and then returns to the North Shore Winter Club for the third game March 12 at 8:45 p.m. HSH hockey team riding high | THE NORTH Shore Neighbour- hood House teen hockey team is riding high atop a wave of success, remaining at the top of the stan- dings in the group’s league. Holding a seven-and-one record at last standings in the Vancouver Inter Youth Ball Hockey League, the team expects to show well in the upcoming playoffs. Coach George McVittie credits the team’s success to the work of players such as Eric Zappernick, Paul Marchant and power-house goai-scorer Kim Lambert. Lambert has scored a whopping 84 goals in the team’s last seven games. Other consistent players helping with the top placing, McVittic noted, include Jason Odegaard, Rudy Zappernick, Jeff Miller, Jocko Gagne and Max Hart. Under the coaching of McVittie and Shauna Sheehan, the squad remains one of the league’s top teams, but has to fend off the Trout Lake team for top spot. !
