Doug Collins get this straight ® SOMETIMES I feel sorry for people on the North Shore and elsewhere who are sending their kids to French immer- sion schools. Many of them are doing it because they believe it’s good for the youngsters to) know two hangudges. Pair enough, But those who think the students will get federal jobs by learning French are deluding themselves. The way things are voing, you're going to have to be French to geton the federal payroll, not just be able to speak Vrench. Learning the language won't even vet you a job as a. bully-boy postman if'a French-wallah wants it. What is going on is as fine a bit of racism as you'll find anywhere, but as usual there's been very litte news about it. It's not the kind of thing Knowlton Nash talks about on The National. This further evidence of Ot tawa’s prejudice ugainst English Canada is to be found in the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Resources, which is headed by that French windbay and bigot Marcel Masse. Masse has laid down that 26 per cent of his ministry’s management jobs and 25 per cent of its scien- tific posts be filled with fran- cophones during the next five years. And by ‘francophones’ he doesn't mean ‘*French- speaking’*. He means French. Arthur Kroeger, Masse’s depu- ty minister, has been kind enough to explain his inaster’s policy. To Masse, ‘‘francophone’’, means a person raised in a home where French was the first language and for whom it remains the first language. Kroeger added Travel delays anticipated CURRENT ROAD and_ bridge construction on Squamish High- way 99 may cause delays. Construction will be centred at Stip Creek Bridge, Lone Tree Creek Bridge and Loggers Creck Bridge. Construction began Monday, and will continue for an indefinite period. When completed, Lone Tree Creek and Strip Creek bridges will be widened from two to four lanes and Loggers Creek Bridge will have a new two-lane bridge. Construction will) occur from 11:30 a.m. to 1 pam. Monday to Friday excluding holidevs. Expect delays of up to 20 minutes in length. motorists - that no matter how well he himself ‘earned French he would not qualify as a francophone. The minister’s purpose. of course, ts 10 clear the was for Canada’s New Class. regardless of whether an Enelish-speaker is beter qualified for the job. Blood before ability. Phat's why Brian Baloney tells the denizens of Baie- Comeau on Canada Davy that they’ve never had it so good. Actually, there's nothing new in this except that the policy is now naked and unashamed. Previous- ly. the pretence was that ‘bil- ingualism’? was the big thing in federal employment, although it’s always been obvious that only in Quebec do most Canadians have a practical opportunity to be bilingual. Meanwhile, Pnglish-speakers in Quebec are the new white niggers of North America. They were shoved aside long ago to make room for those of the right ancestry. But none of the Ouawa politicians gives a damn about that. They’re too busy looking for French votes. Fewer than one per cent of workers in the Quebee civil service have English as a first language, even though one-fifth of the population is of that category. Quebec governments, separatist or not, don’t even pay lip service to equality for the “English” in the job market. As hinted above, no member of parliament of whatever party has had anything to say about that outrage. They are too busy selling HOT ITEM: Letter file folder Now .....$7.97/100 Legal file folder New .....$9.97/100 stuff still worse bil- that and ingualism act is in the cards and all the parts spokesmen are cheering. Might not John feener and td Broadbent have something to say about all this? Dom be silly, They are big only when it comes to rottea tuna fish, In the race to grab othe Quebeo vote, they run even faster than The Great Baloney. Quebee politicians, federal and provincial, can do what they like. But in English Canada you are a “racist if you say two words about how we are being shafted. One or two western Fories have spoken out, though. Not your North Shore MPs, naturally. As true Baloneyites they wourdn't dream of doing such a thing. But Alex Kindy, the Calgary East MP, was quoted recently in) Western Report magazine this way: “As far as E know this is the first time that race has been in- troduced as an official element in a broad national hiring Strategy...By any practical measure, this policy is racist. Lam not just angry, 1am deeply shock- ed. What are we doing to Canada?” Don’t sound so surprised, Alex. We are only continuing the rot that began in the mid 1960s when on Quebee’s insistence we hauled down the Red Ensign, replaced it with the Sign of the Wimp, and tried to rub out history. That’s what we are doing. To cement new out. more, a Meanwhile. parents, remember that French Immersion is French Hlusion. Remember, too, that you read it here first.
