A LIVE penguin and a flasher are rumored to be ap-
pearing at the fifth annual Penguin Plunge to be held
Jan. 1 in the icy waters of Deep Cove’s Panorama
Park Beach.

Ingrid Baxter, photographer for the Deep Cove
Penguin Plunge Club, explained the event began five
years ago when four people plunged into the chill
North Shore waters.

From there, she said, the plunge has grown to last
year’s total of 43 people.

“The emphasis is on plunging,”’ Baxter said.
‘Jump in and get out.”

Unlike the Vancouver Polar Bear swim, the
Penguin Plunge participants jump in and then out.
‘*You cleanse your spirit and get ready for the New

Year."”

Last year, the spectators were treated to a flasher,
who showed his wares from aboard a nearby boat.
Baxter does not know if the same gent will appear
again.

“That would increase the beach crowd this year,”
she joked. .

The club is not a formal club, but a loose group of
people who jump into the icy water every New Year’s
Day. ‘‘It was too far to drive to English Bay where the
Polar Bear Swim is,’ she says explaining the local
plunge’s origins.

The plungers take to the water at 2 p.m. on New
Year’s Day at Panorama Park in Deep Cove.

Baxter added that she plans to take the bracing
plunge in spirit only.
