Her own dance career spans two decades. Trained in the Martha Graham method, she won a gold medal at the Paris International Choreographic Festival in the ear- ly '80s and has performed dozens of individual works for the stage. Since :tucning her attention to teaching on the North Shore, the lack of appropriate studio space has been her. greatest source of frustration. While Cunningham acknowl- edges these are not easy times for dance, she is reasonably. confi dent the school will succeed. If she has demonstrated any- thing over the last decade, it has been her versatility. When a large portion of dance audiences made the leap to TV, for example, she didn’t close up shop but forged a new career creating dance for film. In the last 10 years she has been choreographing for the screen Cunningham has created dozens dance films and educational videos and recently opened her own film company. She’s currently immersed in 4 work-in-progress called Daphne’s Colours, a murder-mystery which she plans to shoot for TV. “Over 50% of our dance au- dience has turned to TV and not a lot of people were making dance programs for TV. I was excited by the idea of performing for film,” she says of her initial foray into the electronic medium. As audiences for live dance continue to decline, more and more modern dance companies are having to change what they do and how they do it in order to compete. While Cunningham sees this as unfortunate, she understands how important it is to change with the times.
