Vancouver this week and watch the Perrier Cana-
dian National Seniors Tennis Championships.

Not that any of these stars
consider themselves over-the-
hill. They’ve simply moved

‘out of the regular circuits and

now compete in what are call-
ed senior, veteran or masters
tournaments. Whether they
move as fast as they used to
is beside the point. They
know how to handle a rac-
quet and make up for a
slightly slower step with a lot
of savvy. . .

People who have seen thes
players participate before say
they are always amazed at the
grace and style with which
they play the game. And the
grassy slope above the main
courts at Hollyburn is a
delightful place from which
to view the feast.

Among the top players in
the draw will be Lorne Main,
the current number one
seniors player in Canada. He
will be returning to play on
his home turf for the first

time in 33 years. .

One of the origihal ex-
ponents, of the two-handed
game, so popular in the pro-
fessional game these days,
Main grew up in British Col-
umbia and was a three-time
national junior champion
before moving to Toronto.

He is also a former. na-
tional singles champion and
was a member of seven Davis
Cup teams.

. The tournament has drawn’
entries from all over the U.S.
and Canada from Hawaii to
Pennsylvania, California to
Quebec, among them a
number of high rankers on
the American. seniors circuit.
It’s expected that about 200
players will be participating,
many of them, of course,
from the Lower Mainland.

Men’s events are singles
and doubles in the 35, 45, 55,
60 and 65 age groups and
women’s are 40s, 50s, also
singles and doubles.
