Kelly, who said he understands the changes in service will go into effect on March 24, calls them the ‘**thin edge of the wedge’’. Kelly charges that what’s being planned for North Vancouver has already hap- pened in Vancouver where a hiring freeze and a series of **smoke and mirror’’ changes have resulted in the loss of 150 positions because of attrition. Kelly says that on March 24, North Vancouver bus riders will find ‘‘vastly dif- ferent names or routes that go into different areas.’ Don Redmond of the North Vancouver office of Metro Transit confirms that the changes will be made in March. Redmond says the changes in service are the end result of a lengthy study of passenger demand. **Basically there’s been a process of load checks done over the past year?’he said, adding that those checks have enabled Metro Transit to re- schedule buses in light of the demand. Asked if the changes would result in an overall increase or decrease in service, Red- mond said it is inevitable that some areas will receive less service and others more. More detailed information on what is proposed — and a fuller response to the charges levelled by Kelly — were not available to deadline.
