C9 - Wednesday, October 26, 1983 - North Shore News SS crea y el | Sa] | AE Atlantic City ‘slam’ stands corrected A FEW WEEKS ago I asked readers for an up-to- date assessment of Atlantic City. I’d gambled there about three years ago and wasn’t too thrilled. One reader took time to write a long letter telling me that | was sadly out of date. I’ve had to edit it somewhat for length but by Barbara McCreadie DEAR BARBARA: First time | have ever writ- ten to anyone in a newspaper but your slam on Atlantic Ci- ty just had to be answered. We visited there in June. 1 had been to Atlantic City years ago and I thought my husband might like to see it. | arranged for three nights and four days, thinking that might be too much time and hoping he wouldn’t be bored. Was | wrong! I have heard nothing else but, ‘‘Why didn’t you allow more time?” Our biggest problem was getting there — travel agents here weren’t much help and | ended up arranging my own route. We went by Amtrak from Montreal to Philadelphia and then an hour and a half bus to Atlan tw City Amtrak turned out to be the worst travelling we have ever encountered Even though we had a bedroom we spent the trip wondering if we'd go off the tails Once we arrived my hus band's cyes opened wide He admitted that he'd no idea it here it is: would be so great. One look at the ocean from our 10th floor window in our lovely room at the Claridge and it was love from then on. I] have to say here we do not play the tables. We play dollar slots — three across. Now you know if one pulls quickly at three dollars a pull how much one can lose if the machine doesn’t want to co- operate. We found no line- ups at all and the slots were certainly no. tighter than Reno or Vegas. | came home $250 up which is something | rarely do from Nevada. The washrooms — well it makes me wonder where you were. We had no such trou- ble. Drinks were passed and the food prices were a little higher than Reno but we still stayed below our budget. The last evening we splurged on a lovely prime rib dinner for $10.95. 1 hardly call that expensive. | am wondering if the Playboy was there four years ago. We really loved that one! Five full floors of gambling — made Vegas look sick. The only Casino you couldn't walk to was Har- rah’s so we paid two something to take a cab and spent the whole day, until 4 a.m., closing time. What a iovely place. Now Harrah's is building the biggest one yet in Atlantic City, right by Caesars. Should be in full sw- ing by next year. Where in Reno can one find anything to compare with Ocean One? We didn’t have enough time to spend there We were very impressed with the security in all the casinos No one Joitering at tront doors with a glass in hand, half bombed out. What a pleasure to see people dressed above the average you see in Reno and what a yoy to walk that boardwalk from casino fo casino and not EVERYDAY IS SENIORS DAY 15% OFF All drycleaning done on the premises (Oulk Cleaning not included) CAROUSEL CLEANERS Park Royal North 922-4811 clutch my purse for dear life. ] could rave on and on how much we enjoyed the fresh air and the whole improved atmosphere over Reno and Vegas. It’s no wonder Vegas is hurting with the big names going to Atlantic City. Will we go back to Reno? You bet — next month, bul we are both prepared to be complaining all the time. Will we go back to Atlantic City? You better believe it! Next we are planning to go for two weeks in June — I know better not to allow just a few days. Getting there 1s going to be another thing. As I say, the travel agents here are of no help. We are sure there is a way to fly from Seattle and we are looking into It. Sorry to be so lengthy but upon looking over my pic- tures I took while there it just got me all stirred up on how anyone could even compare % Vy & a Nevada with Atlantic City and not rate the latter “‘tops’’. ANSWER: They seem to have done a bit of burlding since my visit to Atlantic City. | will admit there were no ‘‘bombed out’’ drunks with glass in hand there during my visit but at that time | didn’t feel one bit safer on the boardwalk than | did in Reno. Not that I've ever worried too much about safety there, unless I’M stupid enough to try a back street alone in the middle of the night. I'll have to be sure to take another look, next time I’m in the East but you can be sure it won’t be two weeks worth! With my kind of luck — and budget — I’m grateful to have enough money to get me home after a couple of days! As for getting there, I haven't heard of any direct “ % can CARTAGENA Genuine Leather Bags top grain Colombian leather soft & durable a pocket for every need several different colors Portfolio Weekender 922-9650 “Supporting Our Seniors The advertisers below entitle any senior citizen to a minimum 10% discount on advertised merchan- GIFTS OF ALL DESCRIPTIONS COLLECTORS ITEMS 1 0 % discount to senior citizens Bi Lamond and Gemstone Spec talists 1598 Lonsdale Ave NV 988-4717 THE STORE THIAT KEEPS NORTH VANC OX IVER TICKING, ANID LAL KING, dise in their stores.
