Good news and bad news for dieters

How many of us are like
the patient who came to his
doctor about a weight pro-
blem?

“Doctor! You've got to
help me! I'm desperate! I'll
do anything to lose weight!”
he insisted. .

“Fine,” replied the doctor.
“Just get more exercise, and
follow this diet.”

“Well, amost anything,”
grumbled the patient, on the
way out the door!

We're so eager to lose

weight, we'll try anything:
any fad diet, any gadget, and
pill or powder to come
along. Anything but the one
thing we know will work:
proper eating and exercise
‘habits. Because when it
comes to weight loss, this is
both the good news and the
bad news. The “good” news
is that the principle behind
weight loss is quite simple
and virtually infallible: use
up more calories in daily ac-
tivity than you consume, and
you lose weight. The “bad”
news is that there are no

the consumption of calories
by your body, or both.

without dieting? Consider
this: a 150 pound person

bicycling for an entire hour
burns up about 210 calories.
Chopping weod for an hour
uses 400 calories: doing

calories; a ham sandwich or
rye with mayonnaise, 480

unless you're a lumberjack,
trying to reduce by exercise
alone without equal atten-
tion to eating habits is futile.

What about dieting
without exercise. It can
work, and in cases where ex-
ercise is medically pro-
hibited, it may be the only
choice. But exercise has so
many benefits that depriving
ourselves> of them out of
sheer laziness seems foolish.
