joard must make every dollar count Dear Editor: Eo wonder if school trustee Clive Uird is as cavalier with his own inoney as he appears to be with pub- lic funds. His recommendation that the school board spend some $726,192 for communications at the new Caulfeild school without the benefit of competitive tenders indi- cates to me a complete lack of care for the public purse. Surely Mr. Bird and those who support him must understand that only by obtaining competitive prices san they be assured that the vendors are working Nard to provide the best for the least money. Without the ben- efit of other prices how can they be stive that their vendor has not “made a mistake and added a hundred thou- sand or so”? The other very geod reason for taking tenders (and selecting the low bid) is to avoid the suspicion that the selected vendor may have “paid: its way” inty this plum position by look- ing after those making the decision. Those who act for the public must be like Caesur’s wife. I's worrying to think that members of our school board are not even aware of this basic tule. They would do well to try to make the most of every dollar. W.A.
