Stove safety reduces

RECENTLY A tragic death occurred in our com-
munity. A retired gentleman was preparing a cup
of coffee and after boiling a kettle of water on the
stove, he began to pour the water into a cup
which was on the counter next to the stove.

As he reached across the stove to pour the water into
his cup, his synthetic shirt caught fire resulting in burn
injuries which subsequently claimed his life less than 24
hours later. .

His loss may have been preventable. We know we
cannot turn back the clock, but perhaps, we can learn
from this tragedy in order to protect other families.
Whenever you are cooking on the stove, please be extra
careful of your environment. Make sure that you wear

clothes with tight fitting sleeves and watch for clothes
touching elements on the stove. Cotton, rayon, linen,
acetate, and acrylic are easy to ignite and burn rapidly.

Loose fitting garment« with wide sleeves, skirts, and
ruffles are the most dangerous. These are more likely to
contact ignition sources and bum faster. In some cases, a
child or adult could be engulfed in flames in 30 seconds.

Snug-fitting garments with tight waists, ankles, and
wrists are safer. These are less likely.co contact ignition
sources and burn slowly, Victims or those close by will
thus have more time to react to smother the flames and
Simit the injury.

If an item of clothing you are wearing does acciden-
tally catch fire and it can happen so easily, remember:
don't run! Instead, stop where you are, drop to the
ground with your hands covering your fice and roll over
and over to smother the flames.
