There’s a broad anthological smattering here of familiar themes from several of the genres that Tchaikovsky plied: the Fantasy Overture from Romeo and Juliet, (he Capriccio italien, the indefagitable 112 Overture (formally callecdt The Festive Overture: 1812) plus, of course, a couple of songs so we can bask in Domingo’s full laryn- geal glory ~- None but the Lanely Heart (from Tchaikovsky's more obscure songwriting efforts) and Kuda, kuda, kuca vi udalilis, Lensky's moribund aria from the 1879 opera Eugene Onegin. Canada’s carling, Ofra Harnoy, eventually pops in to play her typically “eloquent” instrument through Doug Riley's errangement of None but the Lonely Heart — a nice touch — and The Philharmonia does an excellent job throughout, whether conducted by Domingo or by Randall Behr — who grabs the reins whenever Domingo starts to croon. The liner notes tell us that .
