NEWS photo Neil Lucente THIS RARE 1930 MG Record Breaker EX 120 is one of many ex- otic British automobiles that will be on the auction block on Saturday, May 22 at the annual All-British Field Meet at Van ’ Dusen Botanical Gardens in Vancouver. Bob Leflufy of North Vancouver's Autoclassic Restoration expects the car — the first car to travel more than 1060 miles (160 km) in one hour — te sell for over $100,000. Collector car auction chance to buy a dream VICTORIA DAY weekend (Saturday, May 22) offers car buffs a chance to feast on a smorgasbord of classic British automobiles —.from Austins to Aston Martins, TVRs to Triumphs, Minis to Marcos, and Morgans to " AUTOMOTION The - annual All-British Field Meet is held at picturesque Van- dusen Garden in Vancouver every May. Even if you're not a British car fan, it’s still an enormously pretty sight to see these sparkling, restored cars displayed in such a beautiful, floral setting. ‘For the first time, this year’s show will be followed by a collec- tor car auction at the Sheraton Plaza 500 Hotel at. 12th and _Cambie beginning at 7 p.m. . Sponsored ‘by’ Autoclassic Res- torations of North Vancouver, the auction was first held last year at . Centennial Theatre in North Van- couver where the most memorable entry was a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 that sold for $350,000. Never mind that the transaxle was broken and it only ran in reverse gear. This Ferrari was rare, gorgeous and (potentialiy) fast. This year’s auction will feature British cars only, with the excep- tion of a 1926 Bugatti Brescia. The star of the auction is the 1930 MG Record Breaker EX 120, a small 750 cc supercharged en- _ durance racer that was the first car to travel more than 100 miles in one hour at Brooklands race track in England. It is expected to sell for over $100,000. ‘When we bought the car (the EX 120), we had a hell of a time getting it out of England because of its historical significance,” ex- plained auction organizer Bob Leflufy. But Leflufy doesn’t. expect an army of British bidders to try and reclaim the car. ‘‘No, I expect U.S. bidders to come up here and try to take it down to the States,” he said. Vhere are more than.50 cars to be auctioned, including a rare 1963 Jaguar Lynx replica D-type which is expected to sell for over $80,000. Other exotics include a 1969 Aston Martin DBS/6 Vantage; a 1958 Jaguar XK 150; 1959 AC Bristol Roadster; a 1962 Asion Martin DB4; a 1979 Lotus Esprit John Player Special: a 1962 Lotus Elite; a 1973 Jaguar E-Type Roadster V12; a 1967 Aston Mar- tin DB6 Vantage; and a 1971 Rolls-Royce Muilliner Park Ward Coupe. The most valuable car in the auction is the 1926 Bugatti Brescia, .expected to sell for $125,000. “It’s got a British body,’" said Leflufy, ‘‘so we snuck it into the auction.” Bidders with more limited budgets have a lot to choose from too. Offerings asking. under $10,000 include a 196! Austin Healey Bug Eye Sprite; a 1960 Morris Minor sedan; a 1970 MGB GT; a 1974 MG Midget; a 1949 Austin Princess; a 1964 Austin Healy Sprite; a 1972 MG Midget; a 1977 Jaguar XJ6; and a 1974 Triumph TR6.. My favorite is a Tust-free 1965 MGB with hard and soft tops estimated to sell for between. four and five thousand dollars. ; AutoClassic can even arrange export documentation service and shipping for overseas customers. Classic car prices have taken a nose-dive in recent years, par- ‘ticularly high-end cars, but Leflufy believes the market has levelled out. Like many British Columbians in the retail car business, Leflufy is upset with the provincial gov- ernment’s new sales tax. “Qur friendly government has destroyed the entire car business for the next couple or three months with the new sales taxes,’ he complained. Cars over $30,000 must now pay a 10% sales tax. But Leflufy is optimistic that the auction will be a success. ‘‘We don’t require that cars be con- cours. There’s some original cars there. We have a selection in all price ranges, everything from a 1960 Morris Minor for $2,000 to the Bugatti for $125,000. And general admission is free. Bidders must place a $20 registration fee.” All the cars at the auction will be on display at the AH-British Field meet. at. Vandusen Garden prior to the auction. After the auction, Leflufy plans to wrap up the evening with a party, live rhythm and blues band and no- host bar. ‘93 MAZDA MX6 MYSTERE During the entire time Custom Lease has been] . advertising, we have never used any pricing or financing < gimmick to draw customers into our showroom. ee 272?
