20 - Sunday, uly 19, 1992 -- North Shore News FASHION Refuse to be uncomfortable ONCE PART of the counter- culture's dress code in the late *60s.and °70s and the hailmark of flower children, the ‘natural shoe”’ is now finding appeal with comfort-conscious and fashion- forward North Americans. These clunky, sometimes home- ly, always comfortable, corksoled sandals are coming out of the closet and experiencing an ex- traordinary revival that has taken hold with both young and old. When the be-frce tifesiyle of the late "60s changed through the °70s and eventually gave way to the dress-for-success ‘80s, com- fort in dressing lost its appeal and the concept of ‘tpower dressing” was born. Now in the °90s, boomers are developing bunions, their kids have revived the look of the *70s and everybody is refusing . to be uncomfortable. The trend is towards freedom and comfort. The simplicity-starved consumer is also discovering that it’s stylish to be comfortable — the ‘‘natural shoe’’ has started showing up in fashion magazines and on the runways of New York. The ugly-chic phenomenon started on the West Coast and has “gone cust across North America. Naot brand from Israel, like Birkenstocks from Germany, are producers of the trendy tootwear. Twelve months of sandal-wearing a year have taught Israelis how to produce good sandals — offering comfort, correct posture and relicf from backache and fatigue. The shape of a shoe has «# direct influence on the overall feeling of the wearer. Many of today's modern shoes do not fit the natu- ral shape of the foot. The direct result: back pains, incorrect posture, muscle strain and a tired feeling the whole day long.
