26 — Wednesday, January 15, 1992 ~ North Shore News A Peter Pan goes through Hook * * (Tri-Star) Rated General (a? the Esplanade, Park Royal, Capitol, Richmond Centre, Station Square, Guildford and Willowbrook cinemas) HE RUMORS of Hook’s death are greatly exag- gerated. Not only did he escape the crocodile, but he still rules Neverland with an iron hook. Still, the pirate yearns to take revenge on the boy who wouldn’t grow up. If Captain James Hook (Dustin Hoffman) only knew the truth, however, he'd be grinning from one tip of his hook-curled moustache to the other. (And we'd be out of the theatre having barely - warmed the seats.) You see, Peter Pan has grown up. As middle-aged Peter Banning (Robin Williams), he’s not only forgotten his past, but he has turned to legal piracy as a ruthless corporate lawyer. Those golden days of taking children to the second star on the tight and straight on ‘til morning are long gone. Our Peter is afraid of heights. His children, Maggie and jack, are just interruptions to his multi-million-dollar business calls, even in London on a Christmas vacation to see Granny Wendy (Maggie Smith). Tim Bell FILM REVIEW To make a long story short (and we're talking 2 hours, foiks), Hook hijacks the kids to Neverland to entice Peter to a final duel. As is usual for Spielberg, the movie has a fabulous look, with richly imaginative sets and flashy special effects. The early scenes are well-paced bits that quickly Louis Armstrong dates swing hard on new Decca release From page 25 of | Want To Hug You. Adding spice to the blue stew are Robert Cray and band, Albert Collins, Ry Cooder, Nick Lowe, Van Mor- tison, John. Hammond, Carlos Santana, Johnny Winter and Keith Richards. Louis Armstrong ~ Rhythm Saved The World, Decca Jazz/MCA 1991 There’s a swinging song on here in which Armstrong wonders out loud if his heavenly counterpart (Gabriel) will enjoy his music. To make sure, he finishes off / Hope Gabriel Likes My Music with some sweet high bursts. Surely Gabe and Louis are trading righteous riffs at some smoky juke joint way up in cloudland. Make your move... establish Peter's crippling emo- tional attachment to his cellular phone. But that’s followed by a draggy middle as Peter takes forever to figure out who he is. (Call me crazy, but if a fairy named Tinkerbell Julia Roberts) whisks me to Neverland where mermaids give me the kiss of life, and a sneering pirate named Hook gives - me a hard time for feeding his hand to a croc, I’d ask for my green tights.) For the hour it takes for Robin Williams to find his happy thought and fly, we get boring self-doubt and out-of-character one-liners. On meeting the rambunctious Lost Boys: “What is this? Lord of the Flies preschool? It’s an insurance nightmare.” While waiting for Pan to take to the air (quite impressive when he does), there are many diversions. You can play spot-the-star — some of them are well disguised (Glenn Close) and some aren’t (David Crosby). Best of all, we have Dustin Hof- a mid-life crisis 44 The movie has a fabulous look, with richly imaginative sets and flashy special effects. 99 fman's broad and funny perfor- mance as “‘the sleaziest sleaze of the seven seas.’’ While it’s com- ically evil (even his eyebrows are curled into tiny hooks), there’s also a tinge of pity for an old man consumed by hatred. It’s no wonder the film bears his name. There are other moments that ~ work, When the youngest Lost Boy explores the grown-up Peter's face for the Pan hidden inside, the Spielberg magic sparkles. But all the pixie dust in Neverland won’t make the mid-life crisis stuff fly. And for Peter Par, that’s trouble. Peter Pan * x & ¥2 (Walt Disney tome Video) . Walt knew how to tell a story.
