48 — Wednesday, November 21 , 1990 ~ North Shore News ‘Tis the season for new coffee table books H ERE'S A sobering thought: if the feds manage to steamroller over the Senate (and public opinion) and enact the GST, this may well be the last Christmas that Canadians are able to avoid paying sales tax on books. To make the most of this state of affairs, this week and next we'll be taking a brief look at nearly two dozen outstanding coffee table ti- tles for adult giving and receiving. To ensure that there's something for everyone, the categories in- clude: art, nature, the environ- ment, fishing, gardening, cuisine, history, travel, reference and sports. Talk about covering the bases... ts there a decoy collector on your list? If so, she or he is in fora real treat Christmas morning when and if The Great Book of Wildfow! Decoys (Thunder Bay/ Abbeville Press; 320 pp.; $75) slams down the chimney. And that’s a major “‘if.”’ Because The Great Book of Wildfowl Decoys is not only the greatest compendium of Canadian and American working decoys yet to achieve lift-off but the largest. This is roughly four kilograms of splendid photography and text covering the history of North American decoy carving and the carvers themselves. Author David Burnett provides readers with what amounts to an overview of Canadian art spanning more than two centuries and the works of neasly 90 artists. Masterpieces of Canadian Art... is nothing less than a catalogue of our finest art and artists. The stark and striking canvasses of Alex Colville jostle the works of the Group of Seven, Emily Carr and even the abstract visions of Alfred Pellan and Jean-Paul Riopelle. But, beautiful though Adaster- pieces of Canacian Ant... most assuredly is, the best thing of all from my untutored viewpoint is the total absence of anything pricey in vertical stripes. Vancouver artist Michael Kluckner has a new watercolor collection out just in time for the - Christmas season with Vanishing Vancouver (Whitecap; 207 pp.; $39.95). This time around, Kluckner has T O Yaletown's Premiere Northern Italian Restauran: Lunch Monday to Friday 11:30 - 3:00 6:00 - 11:00 Reservations 662-8990 MIKE de STEELE 4%. . book review taken a crusading stance as he at- tempts to galvanize readers to take stock of the city’s vanishing archi- tectural and neighborhood features. He describes Vanishing Vancouver {a magnificent coffer table book, it should be said) as “a tribute to the city’s lost heritage — and a call to arms for those concerned about what's eft.” Fans of Kluckner’s previous megaprojects (Vancouver The Way It Was and Toronto The Way ordered by their bank to liquidate $1 million of are closing our stores in m™ Royal City Antiques have been inventory. One of the most anticipated publishing events of the year is that of B.C. artist Robert Bateman’s latest book: An Artist in Nature (Viking; 176 pp.; $60). Bateman and writer Rick Ar- chbold have taken a strong en- vironmental stance, making this book not only an expression of the attist’s internationally acclaimed talent but also a gloves-off declara- tion of eco-consciousness. This next book is a guaranteed collector’s item, part art, part ref- erence and totally delightful. Royal City Antiques A Treasury of Children’s Books (Abbeville Press; 256 pp.; $75) is an arnazing and unique salute to the dawn of children’s book publishing. Taken from the Osborne collec- tion, these early 19th century classics have been reproduced so that modern viewers are presented with the same typefaces and graphics as the origina} readers were in, say, 1820. Although one of the first children’s books appeared in 1741 (Curiosities in the Tower of Lon- don, oddly enough), the period from 1800 to 1825 saw the prin- ting of kids’ books described as having “an alertness and grace not achieved in any other period.’ The proof is in the viewing.
