We've all shared those uncom- fortable moments, and actor William Davis had one such expe- rience he just can’t shake. In 1965 Davis was summoned for an interview with the London National Theatre Company for tne position of assistant director. in- stead of a panel of ogres, Davis found himself face-to-face with the giant of the theatre world: Sir Laurence Olivier. “| was called in for a series of three interviews,’’ remembers Davis, now a Deep Cove resident. “The one with Olivier was ex- traordinary. All he did was stare at me — he said very little. | started babbling like an idiot. | was sure | had lost the job.” But Davis didn’t botch the inter- view as badly as he thought. Olivier welcomed him with open arms and Davis went on to enjoy an experience few other directors can claim: working in- timately with top-notch directors and actors, such as Albert Finney and Maggie Smith, at one of the most respected major theatre companies in the world. Of course by then Davis already had an enviable resume: he’d worked as general director of the Dundee Repertory Theatre and as artistic director of Chesterfield’s Civic Theatre. He'd also directed Canadian actor Donald Sutherland in Two for the Seesaw. A home-grown Canadian boy ‘CATALOG NUMBER 1828, 1990, COLOM, 96 AMANUTES.
