28 ~ Sunday, February 18, 1990 - North Shore News aes =F ESTYLES Car phone rudeness should be ‘curbed’ DEAR MISS MANNERS — The wealthy have done it again — with today’s technology and an embarrassment of riches, they have found a new way to be impolite. These young people should be ashamed. Some people have always been arrogant in their (reatment of those of us who serve the public, but now, with the popularity of the car telephone, they have found a new means to be discourteous. I, along with uncounted thousands, work at a drive-up window, and have for years. People have always been impatient while waiting to be served — at times the line of cars goes nearly around the building — and invariably any delay is blamed on the employees. Many people have not been shy in venting their anger. I do not wish to be blamed for any delay caused by customers who are so engaged in conversa- tion on their car phones that they completely ignore me or hold up their index finger in that universal symbol that means “I'll be with you in a minute.’’ My time is valuable too. A cus- tomer once told me he was sorry he took so long on his phone, but he made part of his living that way. What did be think I was doing? Would any customer wish to be ignored while a clerk finished a phone conversation? I think not. Miss Manners, I believe it is only tight for a person to show com- mon courtesy and refrain from us- ing a car phone while being helped at a drive-up window. I only ask that you print this letter, and perhaps some of these self-centered yuppies will realize how rude they have been. Tapes can heal From page 27 “The turning point was when my husband and | decided to sepa- rate and I began to work with my own children with healing tapes, and that has developed into a full- time business.”” She said many of her clients, which include both adults and children, overcome their stress- related problems through medita- tion and other relaxation tech- niques. “The other thing (10 overcome Stress) is spending more time in nature because nature is a peaceful environment.”’ Sutherland said most people are afraid that they will change if they adopt this way of thinking — and people do change. She says people are afraid of leaving part of themselves behind if they dare to explore the New Age concept. “My personal philosophy is that everything that is negative can have a positive side.”’ Sutherland began making her “healing tapes’? in 1986 and says the ‘“‘magic ingredient is love and positive reassuring words,’’ especially where children are con- cerned. While she makes tapes for all ages, Sutherland said it is the children who really respond to the tapes. One child, who had problems asserting herself, wrote the follow- ing letter to Sutherland. “IT love the two tapes ‘Body Alive’? and ‘‘School Work and Making Friends."’ It really helped me and | love them. | sleep better and feel more confident.”’ Sutherland will give a free lec- ture this Wednesday at the Serenity Shop in North Vancouver, 228 Lonsdale Ave., from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Space is limited. manners Judith Martin GENTLE READER -- Miss Manners will do you one better. She will request your employer, and all those who manage drive-in establishments, to formulate a pol- icy to circumvent the rudeness you describe. The answer to that ‘I'll be with you in a minute’”’ signal should be the also universally recognized “Pull over there’’ signal of poin- ting to a place beyond the service window, and a beckoning signal to the car next in line. In ordinary lines, people who are not prepared to do business when their turn is called are shunted aside so that those who are ready may be served. Surely this would be a sensible system for drive-in facilities. DEAR MISS MANNERS — Several months ago I purchased a beautiful lady’s wristwatch from a person in need of immediate funds. Shortly thereafter I learned from my brother that his wife needed a watch. I sent the one I had boughi, with the under- standing that it would be returned upon her demise. My sister-in-law met an untimely death, and my brother said, ‘I’m keeping the watch.”’ I don’t want to offend my brother, but I would like the watch returned. Any sug- gestions? GENTLE READER — Miss Manners is trying very hard to avoid the suspicion that you murdered your sister-in-law. But she finds it difficult to believe otherwise that you would have had the foresight (not to mention the atrocious taste) to give a present with the caveat that it be returned upon death, only to have an un- timely (so to speak) death im- mediately follow. Surely you have already offend- ed your brother by focusing on the watch, rather than on his unex- pected bereavement. BATHTUBS REGLAZED | 20-50% OFF All work guaranteed.
