The CD-ROM drive, a device
which reads information stored on
compact dises. allows the user to

access an ineredibly concentrated
database. Reference librarian
Oakley Rankin puts it this way,
“A 5 1/4-inch floppy dise would
hold the equivalent of one Harle-
quin Romance novel. A CD-ROM
can hold 2,400 Harlequins."

Selections currently available on
disc include all Reader's Guide
magazines published from 1982 to
1989; nine English language ver-
sions of the Bible and 18 Biblical
reference works; Shakespeare's
complete works, including sonnets:
the Grolier Electronic Fn-
cyclopedia, and the PC-SIG
Library, a wide-ranging collection
of more than 20,000 computer
software provrams which may be
copied at the library to be taken
home for personal use.

Rankin has a disc on order for
movie buffs. Bowker’s Movie .

Similar systems in Vancouver
and Richmond public _ libraries
have proved to be popular with the
public. In order to allot computer
time equitably, North Vancouver
City library policy limits a user’s
session to 15 minutes.

computer users should bring along
formatted diskettes. The library
