COHO FESTIVAL Start festivities with IN ADDITION to the popular Coho Run and Coho Walk planned for Sunday, Sept. 10, Ambleside Park in West Vancouver will be a hub of activities celebrating the return of the salmon to their North Shore spawning grounds. To start off there’s a pancake breakfast from 8:30 a.m. The beer garden opens at 11 a.m., followed a half hour later by the famous salmon ‘barbecue. Cooked by local celebrities, the barbecue will con- tinue until 6 p.m. There’s ‘plenty of entertainment from mid-morning photo Giadys ise breakfast on, provided by popular local performers, puppet shows, a kite contest, clowns and strolling actors. Get fit during annual WV festival JOGGERS AND hikers wil! again enjoy two highly popular ‘‘fitness’’ events at West Vancouver’s annual Coho Festival Sept. 6-10 — the Coko Run and the Coho Walk. Fitness buffs who prefer a more leisurely pace flock each year to the Coho Walk. Every 15 minutzs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, shuttle buses tzke hikers from Park Royal South up to Cleveland Dam for the start of 2 delightful 8 km stroll back down the wooded canyon trail. A highlight of the walk is the visit to the Capilano hatchery. There are guides at various points along the route and numerous stops of special interest to salm- on-watchers and nature lovers. Wear comfortable walking shoes and allow up to three hours to take everything in. Organized by the YMCA, the Coho Run from Ambleside Park to Kitsilano attracts entrants from all over the Lower Mainland. Over 500 runners participated in 1988, with even more expected this year. The scenic 14 km route crosses Music auditions held -THE NORTH Shore Chamber Music Society is holding auditions for the 1989-90 season beginning Monday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at Sutherland secondary school. Intermediate, advanced and am- ateur string players are welcome. For information phone 926-4513. see STUDENTS IN grades 6 to 12 are invited to join West Vancouver’s highly acclairaed marching band at a registration evening for new members on Wednesday, September 13, at 7 p.m. in the band room at Irwin Park Schooi, 2455 Haywood Avenue. A tradition in the community for 58 years, the West Vancouver Youth Band has openings for all levels of playing ability, including those who have never played an instrument. Beginner, intermediate and senior bands will receive instruc- tion and rehearse twice a week under the direction of new band master David Suomi-Marttinen. Practices for returing band members resume Monday, September 11 from 5 to 6 p.m. for intermediates and 6 to 8 p.m. for seniors. Registration ferms for the 1989-90 season will be sent home with each member. The West Vancouver Youth Band has received man; local, na- tional and internatonal awards and takes part in such events as Com- munity Day aud Remembecrance Day and performs many com- munity concerts. Bobby, who is 94 years old, has been delivering the North Shore News paper for just over a year in the East 20th and 2ist Street area. He delivers approximately 255 papers on ys only. Bobby attends Queensbury Elementary Schcol in grade 5 where his favorite subjects are Math and Science. Outside of school he enjoys swimming at the North Van Recreation Centre twice a week, and 10-pin bowling with family members. He also enjoys watching TV. and going to movies and this summer has seen Ghostbusters, K-9, Batman and Honey I Shrunk the Kids. Bobby has save much of his earnings from the North Shore News for the future and has plans to buy a car when he is old enough. He does however spend some of his money on swimming and going to movies.
