DouG COLLINS © get this straight © WELL, NOW it’s official. If the NDP win the next election, the Minister of Justice will be a pansy. I ~efer, of course, to White Swan, otherwise known as Svend Robinson, the pasty-faced Burnaby MP who is the party’s justice critic and has now proclaimed his queer lifestyle. 1t was no news to mz. For years, { have referred to him in print as “the gays’ MP."" It was the homos’ interests that were his main interest, and we can expect that in- terest to continue. For he is reported as saying he has decided to go public ‘‘to bolster the homosexual rights movement."’ Nothing new about that, either. Let me give you a short list. In 1980, he wanted to know what the timetable was for im- plementing conjugal visits for homosexuals in the prisons. “4do hope that such visits will be intrcduced at Kent institution in the near future,’ he minced to the Federal Commissioner of Cor- rections in a letter written on House of Commons notepaper. Later, he put forward a bill to prohibit the exclusion of pansics and lesbians from employment in the RCMP and armed services. “Progress is being made,’’ he reported happily. In 1985, he was a member of the Equality Rights Commission that toured the country pretending to get “public input.” Other MPs who are not fairies or lesbians were also members. But these are strange times, and as | said then, I could have written the commis- sion's report for it in advance. Homosexuals flocked to the proceedings, much to Robinson's delight. Fairies flew into Van- couver from all over, to whine and weep, about their life and hard _times. Sure enough, the commission recommended that previous moral Please contiibute to: ik KC a Sanadal ' (613) 234-6827. 56 Sparks Ottawa K1P 584 barricrs be dropped as far as homosexuality was concerned. In 1987, our hero was up on his hind legs in Parliament demanding a further reduction in the age of consent for buggery. He stated that no one wanted children to be molested. But lowering the age of consent from 21 to 18, which was being proposed, wasn't good enough. "U, nite, pansies. You have nothing to lose but your pains and the Empire will not strike back. It is in a state of collapse, hence Robinson’s decision to.come out of the closet.’ **T suggest,’’ Hansard quoted him as saying, ‘‘that by retaining the offence of buggery and apply- ing an age of consent of 18 to it, the government continues to discriminate against young gays.”* Unless my brain deceives me, “~Jowering the age of consent to 14, which is what Robinson appeared to want, would aflow older -homosexuals to have anal inter- course with under-18s without hav- ing to worry about being pro- secuted. AIRPORT PARKING The Pacific Hearing Clinic is now open on the North Shore Last May, 200 gays and lesbians attended a three-day conference at the University of British Colum- bia. No prizes are awarded for guessing who was there, talking about ‘‘the status of federal sexual orientation legislation."' Unite, pan.ies. You have nothing to lose but your pains and the Empire will not strike back. It is in a state of collapse, hence Robinson’s decision to come out of the closct, There is no accounting for public taste, and it mystifics me that so many honest funchboxes in horny-handed Burnaby would vote for this guy. It is true, of course, that more vote against him than for him, but that doesn't akter the fact that he kept his job since 1979, Perhaps it’s because he gets his name in the papers so much. And rarely in a good cause. In 1978 he made news by hiding ' Galindo Madrid, a Chilean ship- jumper who decided to be a ‘‘ref- ugee."* This even though Robinson the MP was sworn to uphold the Jaw and tell the cops where the jumper was. “MP defics law to keep Chilean safe in Canada," read the headlines. In 1985 he was found in con- tempt of court for ignoring an in- junction in the South Moresby logging dispute, He did that even though he was not only an MP but also the NDP justice critic, instead of being condemned to the slammer for a while, he was _ given a slap on the wrist and told not to be a naughty boy. I am willing to bet that the media will now sanctify ‘‘Svend,”’ : as they usually call him.
