Family dinners cure ills

I THINK we could cure a lot of the problems of the world
today very simply: restore family dinners. How often does
your entire family sit at the table and eat dinner together?

More important, what do you
talk about? A few years ago, one
of our daughters brought a young
friend home for dinner.
Throughout the entire meal the
boy seemed unusually nervous —
iz fact, the best we could get out
of iim by way of conversation was
“Yes, please’ or “No, thank
you.”’

I assumed that he was simply
shy — and, of course, five Mc-

Luter, | found out that his fami-
ly was forbidden to speak while
they ate! No wonder the poor kid
was nervous.

Some families never sit at the
table at all. Meals are gobbled on
the run or in front of the idiot box.

Other families don’t sit down to
a meal together for the simple
reason that no one cooks — their
grocery list reads like a shipping
order for Campbell's or Heinz. I'd
