In the mid 60s, the back-to- nature movement made earthtones the ‘in’' colors, and it stayed that way till the late 70s when high-tech and nouvelle cuisine made the all-white and industrial steel en- vironment fashionable. But now that the kitchen is again the heart of the home, taking on features from living and dining rooms, the den, and even the home office, it is hardly surprising that it is being invaded by colors from these areas, (00. The most popular designer col- ors are the pastels and those deep taupes and greys that look so great THIS MODERN kitchen sports a rainbow of pastel-colored laminates, ranging from pale lavender to deepest pink. played against white. Other colors that will be strong contenders for the kitchen during the next few years are the greens, wedgewood blue, real red and the full spectrum of yellows. LAMINATE COLORS Even that old standby, harvest gold, will make a comeback, but it will get a new name. One excellent way to introduce color into the kitchen is with laminate, especially in this day and age of the ‘‘European-style’’ cabi- net, which is laminate-covered for fashion impact, as well as for the easy care that is more important than ever for today’s working women. Cabinets will take up so much kitchen wall space that their color will dominate. Today’s laminate comes in hun- dreds of fashion colors, from pastels and neutrals all the way through the brights.
