1984 - North Shore News Al0 - Sunday, September 30, inquiring reporter ee by . Ellsworth Dickson ately, there have been many discussions as to whether the whale poo! at Stanley Park should be enlarged. Those in favor of the expansion say the whales need bigger facilities and those opposed say the $10 million cost is too much. In addition, local native Indians claim the expansion would be located on an ancient village site. Today’s question is: ‘‘Would you like to see the Stanley Park whale pool expanded?’’ Dennis Simpson Vancouver I agree with Paul Wat- son that to keep whales, you need a proper sized pool for them. As far as the money goes, 1t would be spent anyway, and the aquarium expansion is a worthwhile project. Approximately 46 students are currently required jo catch the bus no later than 7:25 a.m. Last year, the bus operated with a 7:45 a.m. pickup time. In a letter to Board chair- man Dawn Sikula, parents’ representative Rosalind MacPhee said changes to the bus schedules have been made at the cost of Lions Bay children. ‘‘It should be noted that our children have no choice but to take the school bus whereas the children from Eagle Harbour at least have the option of using the regu- lar West Vancouver Transit System. And yet, both be- fore and after school, our children are receiving the least desirable transportation available,’” said MacPhee. “*It is the early hour of the morning bus that is our greatest concern. All we are asking for is an extra bus in the morning.”’ She added many of the children using bus transpor- tation live up to a mile away from the bus stop. In an interview with the News, Sikula said the time of the morning bus was moved forward to accom- modate students attending both West Vancouver Sec- ondary School and Gleneagles Community Elementary School. She said after dropping off students at West Vancouver Second- ary, the same bus has to turn around and pick up students formerly attending Eagie Harbour Community Elementary School and take them to Gleneagles School. The run had initially been slated to pick up students at 7:15 a.m. at Lions Bay but a parents’ protest in September resulted in having the time changed. ‘‘An additional bus would cost anywhere from $16,000 to $20,000 to run,’’ said Sikula. ‘‘There is no other municipal bus available to make the run from Eagle y, Harbour to Gleneagles in time for school.’’ She added that at this point, there are no. addi- tional changes planned for the Lions Bay bus schedules: {“W've already moved the time ahead 10 extra minutes.”’ MacPhee said Friday that some children in the Lions Bay area are now trying to get rides from area residents who work in town. She said children relying on the buses are forced to put in long days. ‘It’s really inconvenient for kids @ho might want to join in some other activities, like band or sports. They get home, have to eat, go out to practice, then come home with barely enough time to do their homework,’’ said MacPhee “‘Tt’s very wearisome to fight for a basic human need Children shouldn't have to travel at that hour "’ Thanksgiving Holiday Hours All Branches will be open until 8:00 PM Friday, Oct. 5 Park Royal Branch will be open Saturday, ct. 6 All Branches will be closed Monday, Oct. 8 Car 24 trou Automated Dether (CO UIE) Mac tunes wall te In operation at bl onsdale and Park Koyal Bran hes Lynn Valley Marine Ottve North Shore Community Credit Union Seven branches serutng (he North Shore & Whistler RCA convertible VCR-VKP 900 portable with pro- grammable remote (newest on the market) Camera CK020 (Small Wonder) ultra light weight _. only 2.2 Ibs.
